THE Werribee Shire Banner. WERRIBEE, THURSDAY, DEC. 12 [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 12 December 1912

THE   Werribee Shire Banner.   Werribee, Thursday, Dec. 12   AT the last meeting of the Shire Council Cr. Bayley called attention to a couple of import- ant township matters, one was the erection of a letter pillar near the Shire Hall, the other the starting of an early train from Werribee. Why the Pos- tal Department charges a double fee for letters posted at the railway station is a Federal matter, and Mr. Ozanne, the district representative in the   Commonwealth Parliament, could make enquiries. The running of an early train from Werribee is one for the State Parliament. Last year the Railway Depart- ment gathered in from Werribee £16,659 4s. 8d, and from Laver-   ton, £313 19s 6d, and we incline to the the opinion that this fact should be prominently brought   under the notice of the Railway Commissioners, by the deputa- tion. The train from Irrewarra to Cressy stops at the last   &amp...

PAT'S RETALLATION. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 19 December 1912

PAT'S flTALIATION. It is p?ite as difficult as ever to outwit Pat. This was proved the other day at a trial, when an Irish witness was being examined as to his knowledge of a shooting affair. "Did you see the shot fired ?" the magistrate asked. "No, sore ; I merely heard it," was the evasive reply. "That evidence is not satisfactory. Stand down I" the magistrate said. The witness proceeded to leave the box, and directly his back was turn ed, he laughed derisively. The magistrate, indignant at the contempt of court, called him hback, and asked him how he dared to laugh in court, "Did you see me laugh in court, your honor ?" queried the offender. "No, but I heard you," was the Irate reply. "That evidence is not satisfactory, your honour,'- said Pat, quietly, but with a twinkle in his eye. And this time everybody laughed even the magistrate. "How does it happen that you are five minutes late at school this morn ing ?" the teacher asked, severely. "Please, mn'am," said Willitam "I must ...

THE WEAVING OF THIE WEB. "What must you not think of me?" Adeline cried, when, on regaining her scattered senses, she found the clear, scrutinizing eyes of Miss Chenoweth looking "through her." To that lady's prompt and decided measures she owed her spaedy re covery; but while sihe smiled her thanks, Adeline inwardly' cursed the oflicliousness of the frightened maid, who had brought "Aunt Janie" to he a spectator of a loss of self-control she would have preferred to keep from Miss Chenoweth's knowledge. "I-I assure you I am not a faint ing subject-in an ordinary way." she went on. "But really the wind awoke me from a heavy sleep, and then, while the room was in semi darkness, I conjured up a face peer ing in at that window-pure Imagina tion, no doubt. THE Werribee Shire Banner. WERRIBEE, THURSDAY, DEC. 19 [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 19 December 1912

THE Werribee Shire Banner.   WERRIBEE, THURSDAY, DEC. 19 AS this will be the last issue of "The Banner" for 1912, we take the opportunity of wishing our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and hope they will enjoy themselves during the festive season. An organiser of the Rural Workers' Union addressed an open air meeting in Station- street on Saturday evening last, but did not appear to raise much enthusiasm amongst the "sons of toil." He left by the ten train on his own. Apparently the workers in this district are satisfied with the wage offered by the farmers. Mr. M. Wall, of Wyndham Vale, is the happy proprietor of one of the best crops in the Werribee Shire. Mr. Wall has ... prising barley, oats, and a small quantity of wheat. One of his paddocks, about 42 acres, will   yield three tons to the acre. Mr. W. Kendall, the selected candidate to contest the seat for Corio in the Liberal interest at the Federal elections next year, paid a visit to...
