UNION NOTES. PREPARING TO GAMBLE. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 21 July 1900

UNION NOTES. PREPARING TO GAMBLE. The Newcastle Eight-hour Committee met on Wednesday evening last, Mr. J. Robinson in the chair. Correspondence was received from the W. and B. Island lodge, protesting that the committee was acting illegally in meeting before Alienist. The chairman spoke at length on the failure of the last year's demonstration, and explained that at the last meeting of the 1899 committee, it had been re solved to meet this year six weeks earlier. He urged them to put their shoulders to the wheel, and make this years' demonstration a success. He thought it was time they made a start and did something better than they had been doing for the last five or six years. Mr. Atkinson said they would have to get to work earlier on account of the Art Union, Mr. Cook was of opinion W. and B. Island Lodge was right. Mr, Yial said the decision to meet^ earlier was to do prelimin ary work, and not to go on with ordinary business. This was done to save time. Previously they had me...

Like Rats in a Sewer. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 21 July 1900

Like Rats in a Sewer. As the hunted rat slinks away into the slimy ooze and filth of his beloved sewer, so have the recre ant members of the Newcastle Vigilance Committee sne ked un der the protecting cover ef the equally slimy cover of Falsehood and Cowardice, and there they hide— from the General Commit tee and from the general public. On Thursday, of last week — the regular meeting night — au usual most of the labor delegates were in attendance, tome of them having come long distances in crder to be present; but tone of tho tacked Executive membeis turned up. Consequently no quorum was present. The editor of the Newcastle Herald strengthened bis reputation for making pitiable mistatements by stating in effect that members of 'No. 2 Vigilance Committee' rolled up for a mee.ing, but fai'ed to get a quorum, Air, Davidson is perfectly well aware that there is only one Vigilance Committee, and this is only a dishonorable at tempt to whitewash the reactionar ies, who have got themselve...

SOCIALIST LABOR PARTY. THE CAMPAIGN FUND. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 21 July 1900

SOeiaLIST LABOR PARTY. THE CAMPAIGN FUND. The election of the first Federal Parliament takes place earljT in the first year of the new century. With the dawn of the ,20th Century will be ushered in in the birth, of the new era. Long before the closing days of this opening period of time, the ( triumph of Socialism shall be proclaimed east and west, north -and sonth. No power, no force on earth can stay our onward march. Here in Australia with the commencement of our fettered - nationhood, the Australian So | cialist Labor Party will enter the I political field for the first time. Our forces are not as strong, nor yet are the resources at our com mand as great, as they should be when the magnitude of the task we have undertaken is considered. jjor this cause there are many reasons, them among being the fact that Australian industrial condi tions have notyetdevelopd strong lyerough toprovidethateconomic pressure which has brought mat ters to a climax in the older countries of the worl...

OPEN COLUMN. On Political Economy and the War. II. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 21 July 1900

OPEN COLUMN. , i On Political Economy and the War. By H. Ixgemaxx. n. It h»9 often b- ea quoted as an excuse for keeping armies and navies that the mtn composing tb# n are fitted for not'nng else Admitting them to foe little good belie ;e that it would be more advantige »uh ;o r- ake them do the littln they can do for the benefit of the community than to braiu them up in the ait of destruction, and keeping thonsands of workmen at the needless labour of making can nons and cannon-balls for them to play with. As a proof ha1 democracy and Socialism is not a failure I will , quote again that fine little count y Switzerland ; and cail attention also to the progressive and demo» cratic state of Denmark, where co-operative indue tries flourish, and the Parliament, in which Socialists and ultra Radicals predominate, has decided upon go* eminent interfere ence in industrial disputes ; where education has reached a height hitherto unattained in any othe countries, so that Ibsen, Norway's inte...

Booth, Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 21 July 1900

Booth, Limited. This organisation is getting a big grip on the State purse, and threatens to become more than even a grave danger to the workers of Australia. Like the orthodox churches, the Army is one of the bulwarks of the capitalist class, because it covers up the sores that are a result of the Social Thieving of the capitalist system. Thus the work ers, standard of living is lowered and the tendency is to still f urther lower it ; and because the Army a cheap boarding doss- houses make it possible for the people who take advantage of them to work for much lower wages than is possible to the workers whe hive to pay rent and maintain families. This is bad enough when these semi-charity institutions are main tained by donations solicited from private individuals ; but when the public funds are used to subsidise them, the matter calls for serious protest. It should be borne in mind that the Booth family absolutely control the affairs of the Salvation Army ; the rank and file have n...
