Boat Harbour Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 4 March 1891

Boat Harbour Notes. fPKOlI OUK OWN C0BKESP0NDENT.1 By a paragraph that appeared in your issuo of Saturday last, I notice that we must ' take a back , seat' ro snako stories. Wo cannot top the fifty, but, Ilk the new chum Englishman in Yankoeland, we havocomo to tho conclusion that tho man who tells tho first yarn ' stands a darned poor show.' Farmers havo had very favourable weather far harvesting their crops. Most of tho fields are cleared, and, with good weather this week should nee nlLgrain crops safely gathered. But a sad calamity has over taken tho ' spuds.' On Friday night wo experienced a keen whito frost which, in many places, has cut off the most promising potatoes. Flowordalo farmers havo especially suffered from John Frost's unseasonable visit. Like some of the fastidious residents in Launccston wo havo boon suffering (?) from the smoko fiend, but a good smoko does little harm if thero be not too much blow. On Wednesday last dense volumes of smoke woro being carried seawa...

Waratah Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 4 March 1891

Wtmituh Notes. (l'nOM OUK OWN OOItltKSPONDENT.) It is a great mistake to suppose Hint nothing In tho Bhnpo of fruit cnu bo grown at Warntah. Wo havo this senson hnd largo and lino flavoured gossoburrics, currnuts, raspberries, etc. It is also u delusion to supposo that there is no land lit for ngrl eulturo near Waratnh or Whyto Bivor. There are patches of good land beyond Waratah and on to tho Pieman, nnd I believe thnt a fortune could bo inndo by clearing laud and grass iu tho vicluity of Whyto River. Trade is reviving nt Waratah and people aro congratulating each other on the im proved prospects. Everybody dooms to be pegging out between horo ami the Whyto and if this pegging out rago continues tho wholo of tho country will shortly bo taken up. Let us hope that tho prospectors will spare our cemeteries. At tho 5 mile on tho Hcaiilowood road an important discovery bos been mado, showing first-class returns on tho surface, nnd at tho 0 milo yet another discovery has been made and fu...

Mining Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 4 March 1891

Mining Intelligence, The mining manager of tho Heazlewood S.M. Co. has rcportcci to tho legal manager, Captain James Patterson, that tho eastern side of the eastern lode has beon reached in another place. He then ' staked out a line by tho two places at which tho sldo was reached, which shows that No. 1 trench would have to be extended some 40ft odd before it reached the side. This proves the lodo to bo over 100ft. wide. Two other prospect holes have been sank on it, bottom ing on metal bearing stone, and I am now engaged cutting a trench across tho iron gossan formation mentioned previously as being on tho west siko of tho lodo. Wo have to correct a statement made by our special correspondent at Whyto River in our last issue, with refcrenco to machinery arriving for tho Hoazlowood mine. It should havo been the Godkin S.SI. Co. We have further reliablo news confirming tho valuo of the recent discovery on tho Magnet Bangc, about six miles from Waratah by Mr. W. B. Boll, tho well know...

The majority o£ pel-sous sending replks had reduced both distances to inches, nnd finding them equal, gave tho answer as 0, or nil.
