There are , two parties in town, one called by tliemselves True Bines, who name the other jiarty the Black and Tans — these latter accept the ?name, but do not admit the correctness of the 'designation of the former, and distinguish them by the term Rats— whom, the Black anil Tan terriers chased by instinct. There is one great drawback . in social life inseparable' from the early settlement of a country, and that is the very few marriages that take place, owing to circums sinces which sdl are acquainted with who have resided in the far interior of our colonies. ' In old coun I tries in Fiimrm anv nf thn nrininikil mms nf ? ? ? — — ' '? life is to marry. Young men and young women look upon marriage as a natural result of their birth— old maids and old bachelors are there objects of pity if not of contempt — indeed, a very large per centage of the weaker sex regard single life with a certain amount, ot dislike, if not of horror. To be an old maid is to be exposed to reproach. Even an un happy marriage is thought to l»e better than to remain single. Philosophers too are prying into all things— they even measure the advan tage* and disadvantages of celibacy with a coldbloodedness that is in itself perplexing, j For instance, the Registrar-General of Scot land, a few years back, demonstrated...

OUR STEAMSHIP LINES. CARDIFF TO NEW YORK. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 19 February 1873

OUR STEAMSHIP LINES.— CARDIFF TO NEW YORK. We learn that another passenger line of steamers has been u laid on' from the United Kingdom to America. The enterprising people of Cardiff have resolved not to be behind the times in this respect, and accordingly m October began with i number one of three first-class vessels to run from that port to New York. This is only a necessary re sult of the rapid advance of trade ; which has characterized Cardiff for the last thirty years. The rise and pro- ress of this port has been mainly, if not altogether, due to the fore sight and ability of the late Marquis of Bute, seconded by the judicious efforts of the trustees; of his estate after his demise, and during the minority of the present Marquis. HORSE BREEDING. M. M. M., writing to the S. However much I the Cape horse may be esteemed in I India, no perceptible diminution of! the deficiency could be effected from | thence. It is from Australia mainly that hope must be derived ; and to this end our breeders should be [ warned in time.^ In all probability j the first intimation they will receive J will be the sudden arrival amongst ! us of agents, cavalry officers, and veterinary surgeons in an agony of haste to furnish themselves with such remounts as, to say the least, would at present be found only with extreme delay, trouble, and diffi culty.
