The former's interests were centred iu the fact when fixing the taxation due regard would be made to industries already established in the new Commonwealth, and that nothing would be . brought forward which would in aqy way interfere with or retard their future development. Those^olding the fiscal faith of Cobden looked to the bringing forward of the tariff proposals with a great deal of anxiety, not unmixed with curiosity.
