DAN BARRY'S DRAMATIC COY. "THE FACTORY GIRL OF MELBOURNE." [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 28 August 1896

DAN BARRY'S DRA MATIC COY. 'THE FACTORY GIRL OF MEL BOURNE." Tue production of this highly sensational and emotional drama at the Town Hall on- Monday-ovening Inst-was-greeted with that which was calculated to fill the managerial bosom with delight, and the coffers to overflowing, namely-a " bum per house." The hall was crowded. The play is founded on factory life in Melbourne, and the sweater and the sweated being given a good deal of pro minence. The cast is somewhat d'ffer ent to that of the previous-the change not tending to improve the performance. The drama was preceded by a prologue, showing the interior of the factory girl's home, and the death-bed scene of her sister Harriet (Miss Inn Courtenay). A lapse of seven years then ensues. The first act of the drama is productive of some very fine scenic effects, the prin cipal of which is the sewage opera tions in Fitzroy-street, St. Kilda, where an attempt is made to murder Ettie by means of a large stone, held in the air by the ...

Dairy Dots. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 28 August 1896

Dairy Dots. Qca;osar and quality are not necessarily irreconcilable in milk. Many Jersey cows with large butolter records are also noted as large milkers--not large as compared with Holsteins, but large for oowe that put better in their milk ; but as a rule very rich butter cows are not great milch cows. Nor is it detirablo that they should be, here the Sot rct aimed at is butter. In this case the smaller the number of pounds of milk nerce. i sary to make a pound oI better the better for the butter maker. By careful selection and persistent breeding for that purpose it is easily within the power of any first clased breeder to establish two distinct strains of Jerseye, one producig a moderate or small quantity of milk very rich in butter; the other giving a copious flow (40 to GO pounds at flush) of milk containing a good per cent. of burtter. There are conditions in which the larger milkers would be more desirable, because more profitable. But Jersey breeders in general will find th...
