TO THE EDITOR OF THE RIVERINE GRAZIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 17 March 1875

TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE RIVERINE GRAZfER. Sir, — Since, the opening of the season,' by the fine rains, all kinds of grass ;ancl herbs have had a vigorous growth, and none more so than theBatliurst burr, which the squatUrs have had to contend against, no doubt, at a grcat'oxpensc. There is one great drawback to the 'extirpation of the burr, viz. insufficient- tools. It is a well-known fact that mechanics use a number of tools for niakimr one article. The un and down hoe is the only tool in general use, it is very well where the burs are straggling, but another hoe could be used to. advan tage, say from six to eight inches broad, made out of used up crosscut or pit saws,4 with a strong eye riveted on to the plate at an angle for striking sideways where thick clumps occur. I have seen the common scythe used to advantage, but it. sbon gets out of repair, owing, to weakness and length of blade ; asevthe could he made of saw plate, eighteen inches long and three, inches broad with a strong ...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE RIVERINE GRAZIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 17 March 1875

TO TIIE EDITOR OF TIIE RIVEMNE CRAZIER. Sir, — lam delighted'at observing in your paper of the 3rd inst., that, at last, there is a prospcct of trout being introduced into tho Murrumbidgee. Mr W. L. Higgins deserves the utmost praise for undertaking the enterprise — as do you, Mr Editor, for ventilating it iu The Grazier. Both tho White and Brown Salmon Trout will do well in your river, and for the present it may be as well to confine your eflbrt to the introduction of trout alone. Your native fi6h are far better than Perch, Carp, Tench, or Roach, all of whfch are pond fish, nncV*not worth turning into a good river. After a few years you will have Salmon, and your new Fish Acclimatisation Society cau, in the mean time, be learning matters con nected with fish breeding, as also collecting money for the introduction of the English Salmon. You will turn out your trout in October next, and be taking them in October, 1877, over four pounds weight. Every man on the river should join to ad...

HAY ANNUAL RACES. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 17 March 1875

HAY ANNUAL RACES. It is now several years since the residents in the town'] and^district established races at fixed periods. In the i earliest days ' horsey' men made up matches, and there | was lots of fun, and no lack of money. But it is not I necessary to dilate upon the glories of the past, al- i though the pleasures of memory are rallowed to all. | The approaching races, uuder the auspices of the Hay Jockey Club^ bid* lair to excel all its predecessors in the I elements which contribute to success on the turf. The ^ club, having^ secured a grant of land from the Govern- , ment, have laid out a new race-course, which in many ! respects will be better than the old one.. They have not had time to fence it in, but have put up an ex- i ccllcnt saddling paddock, which can scarcely be sur passed up-country ; it is enclosed withcorrugated iron, Oil high, and affords all the conveniences requisite. A ' temporary grand-stand has been erected, but the per manent structure will not be oa t...

SHEEP. HOW TO TELL THE AGE BY THE STATE OF THE DENTITION [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 24 March 1875

SHeep. HOW TO .TliLI- tKE AGE DT THE 8TATK OP I . . - ' THE DENTITION. ! '* 1 ^ (PHOM THE AGRICULTURAL OAZBTTE.) : , I Sheep are less frequently tnan otneri ani mals in dispute in consequence1 of discrepan cies between the stated ago and the state of their teeth ; but there are, nevertheless, sufficiently good grounds 'for submitting tbese animals to the same test -which is ap plied to oxen and pigs when- any doubt exists as to the correctness of tho entry. ' There is an impression current among flock masters that sheep put up a pair of broad t.ppth— -that is' to say. nermanent incisors- — i every year, and the expressions 'two- toothed sheep' or ' four-toothed sheep' are frequently held to bo; sufficiently explnna , tory of the animal's nge. This method of. . .calculation, however, is by no means exact .enough for the inspector at an Agricultural ^exhibition, as he must, or should, 6e well aware that there may be some months dif ference in age between animals whose incisor teeth ar...
