SOME USEFUL PLA.NTS. (From the S. A. Chronicle.) CHurA or Earth Almond (Cyperus escu lentus.) Use.—For oil-making, as food for pigs and poultry, and sometimes as a substitute for coffee. Also known as German coffee berry. Cultivation.—Sow in spring in light and gaudy soils in rows 2 ft. apart with 15 in. between plants in the rows. The plants bear numerous nuts; on. the roots in the soil, and pigs or poultry may be turned in to harvest them.

The report for the half year ending June 30th 1896 is as follows:— The Annual Statements of the Accounts of this Bank show that the total number of Depositors with accounts bearing interest was 90,148, an increase of 3,409, on the previous year; the Deposit^ for the year amounted to .£1,729,849 19s. 7d., an increase of £312,317 Is. 9d. on the previous year; the With drawals for the year amounted to £1,674,417 14s. 2d., an increase of £894,375 5s. 9<i., on the previous year; the rl'ota| Amount to the Credit of Depositors was £2,836,346 8*. 7d., an increase of £145,078 9s. 6d., on the previous year. The a-uount at credit of 10,019 de positors having accounts not bearing I interest under Section 36 of.the Savings Bank Act was £10,806 7s. lid. The number of deposits was 172,817 and the withdrawal...

BENMABK IRRIGATION TRUST, AUGUST MEETING. The meeting of the Renmark Irri gation Trust was, held at the Trust Office on Monday last. ' There were present Colonel Morant, chairman, Messrs. J. Chapman, J. I. M'Garvie, R. Turner, J. M. Smith, W. E. Mus pratt and A. Peters. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secre tary staled that all the wages for July were paid up, except in two cases where the men had not been for their cheques, which were ready for them. In accordance with instructions given at last meeting the Secretary had obtained a report from Mr. Godfrey as to moving the pump at Settlers' Bend, and plans were submitted, the estimate of the cost being £30. The men will be put on this work when the present irrigation is over, but the excavation for the well was to com mence the uext day.
