' More than 25 members attended tbe meeting, which resulted In the reelection of the president ( Mr. Ii. McLennan) and the secretary (Mr. Ch It. Smith). Mr. McLennan in his report said tliat I from the U.G.A. viewpoint the main | issues for the year included the con tinued rise in wool prices. The promise of the Federal Govern ment to distribute profits of the plan j had been reasonably satisfactory members. This latter was a matter of | approximately £ 30,000,000. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR [Newspaper Article] — Western Star — 8 April 1949

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sir, Please grunt uie a little spnee to say how interested I have liceu iu reading your Kifty Yenrs Ago To-duy column, especially the advent of Rutledge as Member for Boma in our State Parlia ment in 1899. I wonder how many "Romans" of to-day know the circumstance!! con nected with that election. The facts are that Mr. B. King, mine host and owner of the old Court House Hotel, known to-day as the Empire, w&b the man who pioneered the politi cal Labour Movement in Boma as far back as 1892 to my knowledge, when he held open air meetings in Boma every Sunday night, using bis hotel buggy as a platform. He waa of the old school when men were men, and tbeir word was their bond, and was known as Honest "Bob" King. "Honest Bob" took this a a slur on his honour and integrity and re fused to sign, with the result that Bill Lawson stood as the endorsed...
