A meeting of Baptists chiefly resi dent in Westgarth iwas recently held in the house of Mr. Rogers, Simp son street, for the purpose of con sidering the possibility of doing something to meet the spiritual needs of that great district, which lo cally has neither a Church Service or Sunday School. The burden of need fell upon the meeting, and a request was forwarded to the Bap tist Home Missionary and Church Extension Committee asking that the necessary steps be taken to or ganise a work in Westgarth. The committee has acceded to. the re quest, and a large block .of land, cen trally situated, has been purchased. Arrangements are being made for the erection of a School-church. The Fruit Industry. THE DELICIOUS CASABAS, OR MELON-LIKE FRUIT, AND THEIR CULTIVATION. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 4 August 1917

The Fruit Industry. THE DELICIOUS CASABAS, OR I MELON-LIKE FRUIT, AND THEIR CULTIVATION. Sir,-These magnificent fruit are as yet practically unknown here, where they could be grown as easil' as melons or pumpkins. They arceI totally distinct from ordinary rodk er wt*er melons, and in a class yi themselves. In California, U.S. , where the climate is similar to ours, they are very profitable and are. grown extensively, and hundreds of car loads are forwarded to the East ern States each season. There are nan.y varieties, the best of which appear to be ihe Improved Hybrid, Goldrn Hybrid, Beauty, and White African; they all possess a most die licious flavour, and are more nutri tious and sustaining on account of, the firmer flesh than ordinary mel ons. They ripen iip to quite late in the fall, and keep well into early winter; and, if stored in a cool place will keep still la~ter. Varieties placed in a sunny window -for a few days will ripen well; In appearance most of them resemble a har...

WAVERLEY TENNIS CLUB. Members of the above and their friends had a social gathering in the Ivanhoe Hall on Wednesday, the 25th ult. Dur ing the evening Mr T. Davis (president) gave a brief address on the progress of the club, stating that during the past two years it had been in existence £130 had been spent on the court and its sur roundings, and he was quite satisfied that the progress made was due, to a large extent, to the untiring efforts of the hon secretary (MIrs Bellamy). On behalf of the committee and members he presented Mrs Bellamy with a solid silver jardinier as a teken of their esteem. He explain ed that its intrinsic value was very poor compensation for the valuable services she had rendered to the club, but it car ried with it something Mrs Bellamy would prize much more, i.e., the best wishes of every one connected with the Waverley Tennis Club. Mr M. Brod erick briefly responded on behalf of Mrs Bellamy, and informed the members that although the club was only two y...
