Dear Sir,-Omitted in my last to make it plain that the Governor and suite, Premier and Ministers of the Crown and all other illustrious and distinguished visitors attending the railway opening ceremony, could be entertained at Lily, where, I am certain, they would enjoy themselves very much better in the society of the ladies and children and chatting to the old pionecrs, than sitting in the shire hall ""iuzzling and gorging~i whilo listening to the vapid vapouringsof puerile toliticiLins. The novelty of the thing should be its recommendation. -Yours truly, THE CAD.

Railway Agitation Reminiscences. "A Forty Years' War." An Interesting Epitome. (No. 2). [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 September 1909

A Forty Yea' WTar." An Interesting Epitome. (No. 2). In the same year (1883) Mrr. L. F. Cussen, of the Railway Department, pre sented a report of the survey. Two schemes were proposed. The first was similar to the one now being constructed, but it provided for the lino following the Spring Creek Valley until within 4 miles fromn Alexandra, where it was proposed to leave the valley and cross the Montezuma Gap thy a tunnel of 9 chains long), over the E,!lint'n Creek, and through the Vic toria (;: i, 1s the racecourse. The second scheme prol-ued the junction station being in Annie llaird's paddock, in place of Ctlhkin, thence to Alexandra by the former route. Mr. Cussen ventured the opinion that by tatking the line into Alex andra a large traffic in grain, timber, etc., would ensue, and a marked contrast in the trade and prosperity of the district. It has taken successive Parliaments and Governments 26 years to give effect to h at opinison, which, by the way, was supported by Mr IBucha...

PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TFMEzE N5C TIMIDE FRIDAY. SE1PTEMIBER 21. 1909. --------- - ---- ---- WE have been reminded often that the caretaker of the hall, street and gutter' cleaner, and lamp-lighter is a sweated employee of the Alexandra Shire Council. In other words, he is over-worked. It was said so whlen the man was appointed to the position and its manifold dutics, yet he has been allowed to attempt to follow out his duties without any attempt being made, or even suggested, to relieve him of his over-work and thus give another person employment. The duties laid out for the caretaker, gutter cleaner and lamplighter are such that it is itmpossible for him to carry them all out, consequently nmany small and urgent work' are absolutely neglected. To cope with the duties of a portion of his position, he has to lot the rest go by the board. To make a long story short, a second man is required, and that at ones. The drainage system of the town is, a grave menace to the health of th...
