The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 8 March 1878

©fte jawing ff uUetitï, ROCKHAMPTON. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1878. SOMETHING in thc nature of a teapot storm burst yesterday in reference to the appoint- ment of a poundkeepea for Yaamba. It appeared from thc facts scated at the meeting of magistrates that for some years past Mr. P. F. Macdonald, M.L.k., has been in the habit of constituting hil self a court of petty sessions at Yaamba, om appointing or re- appointing thc poundkeel sr in proud defiance of the law. It seemed further that five or six months ago, Mr. Hi lt, of Glenprairie, a large stocltowncr, broug it a rather serious charge against the Y« unba poundkeeper, which led to inquiries, the result of which was proof that the pt indkecper had not only been illegally a ipointed, but bad never given the sureties required by law, or complied with several ther of its plainest provisions. In conscquci ce, some three weeks since the Clerk of Fe ty Sessions was in- structed to convene a neeting of the local justices for yesterday, for the...

NORTHERN MAIL NEWS [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 8 March 1878

NORTHERN MAIL NEWS   By the northern mail boat we have our usual files. Annexed are extracts. COOKTOWN   Tlie local papers are singularly aware of news. Mr. John Walsh, an old resident of Cooktown   and justice of the peace, has taken his depar-   ture. The Customs revenue of the port shows   a sad falling off, the total receipts for Feb- ruary having been (according to the Herald)   only £3385 Os. 9d, or less than one-half the   average of last year. Still gold production keeps up. The amount of gold exported from   Cooktown during the month of February was :     To Sydney, 11,972 ounces, and Hongkong   2304 ounces, in all 14276 ounces.   THE PALMER.-The Mining News says that the European population—men, women, and   children, all told—on the Palmer, does not now number more than 600. The number of miners is estimat...
