NOTES BY THE MAN WITH A NOSE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 7 January 1870

NOTES BY TIE MAN WYITH: A NOSE.. In Iis last communication, which was also. his first, the Man with a Nose wished every body "a Happy New Year," for he had no. objection to be considered amiable at this. particular season. Ile hopes all. will try to. he better and do better during the year 1870. His forte lies not in sermonising or senti mertalising, that is if he has any forte atall: (piano frnto would he moroein his line), The. NIw Yenr. however, which we were all in what rndey, and has kicked up already a, .jlly row. We ought. to remember that he is very young, and has not soon much of the. world as yet. He will, no.doubt, improve. upon ciquaintance. At all events, the .Man, with the Nose thinks.it would be .as well to, keep on friepdly terms with our visitor, as,. unless' we "hook it" to another country,. we are. bounid ti. rieet, him daily and nightly. for some time, and rude as be he has been, none of us would care to " cut" him. WOOD'S POINT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 7 January 1870

WOOD'S POINT. . ~-4-- (From our own Correspondent.) : The last week of: the old year has been kept as jolly as any in previous. years, many people remarking that "the Point" never looked livelier. On New Year's Eve there were no less than three balls-one at at the Commercial Hotel, under the aus pices of the different orders of Oddf?ollows, a free ball and supper at Crowley's Hotel, and aselect quadrille party at the Reefers' HIotel. I have been informed that all wora well at tended, and that everything passed off in a most satisfactory imanner. On New Year's mo:rling the sun shone out with all its brilliancy, many prognosticating that a warm (lday was before them, and so it was. At 12 o'clock the two ordera of Odti fellows could be seen getting their regalia in preparation for the clay, and aboat the caine time tltheSt. Patrick rJ incty were al:eo getting aiiady. Our Alexpn.dra, Eleven have had, the conceit taken out of them by the men they so lately Jumped upon. Their.cook-a-doodle do is now over, and their chance of being sent home to meet the best eleven of All England.is for the. present indefinitely post poned. For however well thley Mnay be able to play at Mansfield on a fine day, it is quite clear that they have no chance on a wet day on their own ground. Laolking at the result of the late match which we publish in another column, it is difhiult to account for the extraordrinary difference between this and the one played at Mansfield, at which the Alexand.ans heat their opponents in one innings, and 25.runs to spare. 'Tlht there is a goq..deal of luek in cricket we will ad~mit, but this will not account for the wonderful discrepancy ;.we are forced .to the conclusion that the Alexandra tenta having had such triumph in the form3r match, hold their opponents too cheap, and would not be at the trouble to practise., As there will be anoth...

NEW YEAR'S DAY AT YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 7 January 1870

NEW YEAR'S DAY AT YEA.   (From a Correspondent:) The people of Yea, thanks to the liber - ality of our principal tradespeople, began the new year at one of the jolliest and mer- riest picnics that ever came off within 40 miles of our interesting little township. From 9 in the morning till long after noon one con- tinual string of buggies and carts full of happy families, people on horseback and people on foot might be seen wending their way along the peaceful valley of the Muddy Creek to the celebrated Murrundindi pad- dock, kindly lent for the occasion by Mrs Miller. There were over 200 people present, and hearty enjoyment was the order of the day. As soon as the eatables were cleared away, dancing commenced, and horse-racing   was started, while others amused themselves with hunt the slipper, kiss in the ring, and croquet till the shades of evening forewarned   all that before the 5 miles back was accom- plished, darkness would have set in.
