AGRICULTURAL NOTES. FARM WORK FOR JANUARY. ABRAHAM LINCOLNE'S MONTHLY REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 January 1879

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. FARM[ WORK FOR JANUARY. ADRAUiAM LsNCOLNE's8 MONTIILT REPORT. Rust.-Tho all-absorbing.toplc of the day in many localities is " rust," its causes and remedy, or prevention. It is impossible to decide upon a point where so many practical men have as many varied practical opinions. The subject is one of great importance to all wheat-growing farmers, as well as to the bread-eating public, and it is hoped, at the forthcoming lecture that Mr M'Ivor will be able to throw more light upon the matter than I can. I have looked lately over many memoranda bearing upon the question, and which I have collected for very many years, and some are very exhaustive. The following are a loew of the decided opinions given in evidence before various commissions appointed to collect such :-That rust is essentially a vegetablo fungus, attacking the plant ex ternally, and brought into active operation by certain atmosphericand climatic conditions, chiefly heat and humidity-that rustprevall...

MARRYING FOR MONEY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 January 1879

MARRYING FOR MON EY. It is currently reported that, "in these bard times, the number of persons, of both sexes, who are on the look-out to marry for money,, is larger than ever before." Whomsoever marries for a fortune, pays rhe highest price for it that is ever paid, except by one who commits] a, crime for it. A man who had any, decency of charater left, could not marry for money without suhob a sense of humiliation and degradation as would make him hate the womani whose money he was spending. And all experience shows that a woman who marries a man she does not love, how ever rich he might be, derives no satis. faction of heart from the clanking of her golden chains. The best way to geb a fortune is to acquire it by industry and economy; and it gives all the more satisfaction when it has been acquired by the united efforts of a true-hearted:pair that married for love. The Native Companion, barge, foundered at Maude on Monday, with about 60 tons of cargo on board for Hay. VALUAOLE D...

dlixa nda & gena itandard PUmLISUID EVERTI ATORDAY "dEXCaLS~Olon. SATURDAY, 4Tu JANUARY. As a general rule deputations are ad mitted on all aides to be little better than nuisanoee, but as there are in all eases exceptions.to ovary rule, o, fortu. nately, has the late one proved that went down from Alexandra to interview the Ministry, and if possible obtain a remission of the one thousand pounds the Council had undertaken to pay the Government for the new buildings, or rather that portion of them that were intended to be used as the Council Chamber and offices. Messrs Whiting and Whitelaw were deputed to repre sent the ratepayers in the matter, and we learn their mission has proved suc cessful, and therefore the money will now be expended in the erection of suitalble premises upon their own ground at the site of the present dilapidated building in Grant street. This will certainly be a great improvement, and, we think, will meet the [approval of those even who were adverse t...

ALEXANDRA RACES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 January 1879

ALEXANDRA RACES. New Years Day broke splendidly. and as a large number of visitors had arrived the evening before, the township looked quite gay ; and at one o'clock, the time of the first race, there must have been some five hundred people on the course, and all the youth and beauty of the district certainly turned out to see the sports, the only draw back to the pleasure being the intense heat and no small quantity of dust. This no doubt, though very inconvenient to the public, had a good effect upon the trade at the booth, at which host Vining, with a staff of assistants, had plenty of customers and no doubt lie will find his venture a very profitable one. One or two fights would have taken place, but the police, with great good humour and patience, prevented any mischief being done, and altogether a mostenjoyable day was spent, the lest race being run just before dark. Thel handicapping gave general satisfaction, and resulted in some close contests, an account of which appears b...

FATAL ACCIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 January 1879

FATAL ACCIDENT.. On Friday evening a sad accident occurred to a young man named Herman Behrmann, who for some months past has been in the employment of Mr Knight, of the Lion Brewery, which resulted in his death, at 2 p.m. on Sunday last. The deceased was coming into the township, and was riding in a waggonette, sitting on a cask when a wheel either dropped suddenly into a rut, or went over some obstruction, as the poor fellow was thrown out upon his head. When taken up. it was found he was paralized. He was attended   with the greatest care by the members of Mr Knight's family, and on Saturday. was removed to the hospital, where. he breathed his last on the following day, as above stated. His parents, who reside at Castlemain had been sent for, and arrived only in time to be at his funeral. A Magisterial enquiry was held on Monday before T. Hall, Esq, J.P., and the evidence taken proved that the occurrence was purely accidental, and a verdict was entered accordingly. T...
