Millet Industry. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 3 March 1905

Millet Industry. The Tenterfield "Courier" reports     that Mr. Reid, of the Armidale broom factory, recently gave a practical demon stration of harvesting aud packing millet, on a farm in that district. He first show   ed how the millet should be cut. He. explained that for this purpose a thin- bladed knife with a very keen edge was best, and the millet should be cut by placing this knife on the stem, and pull ing the stem on to the knife. This mode was better than cutting, which left the   sheath leaf on the stalk, whilst if the cut   was made by pressing the knife through the stem the sheath leaf was cut off with the fibre aud thus had to be taken off afterwards, entailing much more work. Last year the growers had made a great mistake by cutting the stems too close to the fibre. Stalks with short fibre should   have stems about 9in. long, thus making the length uniform with the long fibre on which the s...
