SGA announces budgets allocations by Katie Galley wire services Editor SGA announced the preliminary allocations of the 1999 - 2000 budget in a meeting last week. They are scheduled to vote on final allocations Thursday, April 22. About 45 groups on campus turned in proposals for money. The SGA Budget Committee reviewed the proposals and then interviewed some of the groups for more details. The Budget Committee had less money to distribute this year. Spring Fever will be held in Apartment Quad [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 22 April 1999

Spring Fever will be held in Apartment Quad by Ayodele Jones managing editor After a week of debate and maneuvering, students at Behrend have been granted their wish; Spring Fever is now in the apartment quad. Spring Fever will be held on April 23, 1999. It was never a question of when the event was to be held but where. In the past Spring Fever has been held in the apartment quad, however the event was moved because of alcohol consumption (an increased use by underage students) and the safety of the students became a question. Around campus there were posters advertising Spring Fever, yet a location was not specified. Students and staff were attempt ing to come to a compromise for a site, the Reed Patio, the basketball courts next to Perry Hall and the lawn between Reed and Perry, were all pri mary contenders. Until last week, students and staff were attain impasse and a location for Spring Fever was still unknown. Ken Miller, acting Dean of Student Af...

Controversial Stadium Expansion at University Park [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 22 April 1999

Controversial Stadium Expansion at University Park by Elizabeth Guelchei assistant editor In March. Penn State President Graham Spanier spent some lime in the capital petitioning the Pennsylvania House and Senate Appropriations Committees for funding. Every year, the state government allocates money to colleges throughout Pennsylvania for things like updating technology and improving the standard of living on campus. This year, however, included in Spanier's requests was a proposition for $15 million separate from the money allocated for use within the university. The proposed $15 million would instead fund, in part, the $85 million expansion of Beaver stadium at University Park. However, some students think the money could be better spent. In May of 1998. the Penn Stale Board of Trustees approved the Beaver Stadium expansion to include 10,000 more seats as well as the addition of skvboxes. UP Athletic Direc tor. Tim Curley said that no tuition money wo...

Nothing's new [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 22 April 1999

Nothing's new A view from the lighthouse Several days ago, Housing and Food Services passed out a list of "charges associated with the end of the semester closing" to all students living on campus. This list was comprised of over twenty things residents are required to do to their rooms before leaving, such as sweeping the floor, cleaning the microwave and microfridge, cleaning the windows, etc. If these chores are not completed, Housing and Food Services plans on charging students a set fee plus labor (if applicable). Just when we all thought Housing couldn't piss us off even more, we were proved wrong when we received these. First of all, when we first arrived, the rooms were not clean. Weren't we always told by our parents to leave things the way we found them'.' Well we should leave our rooms the way we found them, without being penalized. Second of all, the charges are ludicrous. For example, there is a $68 charge to remove one piece of furniture, and a $25 charge for n...

I was only 45 minutes late tonight [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 22 April 1999

I was only 45 minutes late tonight Live FromQ mana AYODELE JONES During the course of this year, as managing editor of The Beacon , I decided to use my editorial column as a forum to express my grievances with school and well, basically life in general. I have taken this opportunity to voice my opinions about a wide array of subjects, such as racial discrimination, marijuana, friendships and of course my travels and follies aboard the wonderful and spectacular Greyhound bus. Live from Guyana was created to be a voice - MY voice. As an African-American woman of Guyanese parentage, I was hoping to enlighten you, my fellow readers with my quips and complaints and if I didn't, oh well, I'm not losing any sleep. This semester has been somewhat of an evolution, for 1 am not the same person that I was when I first started writing this column in August. I have more wrinkles around my eyes due to the many sleepless nights I have endured because of the layout of this paper (and to t...

History and all that jazz [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 22 April 1999

History and all that jazz The Lobster and the Music to the Dance of Life MIKE PERKINS Being that this is my last column of the year, I feel that it is time to unveil the story behind the title, The Lobster and the Music • to the Dance of Life. Before 1 continue I must warn the easily bored and those with short attention spans that this story is bad and corny. While I will attempt to explain, you will not find the inside joke funny in any way at all. Now that you have all been properly warned, let us continue. Flash back to my senior year of high school (everything gets wavy, and that cool dream sequence music plays now). Most of high school is over, and neither my friends nor I care much about the rest of the year. We decide to have fun at the expense of our school which was terrible for the entire twelve years I spent there. My school is on the edge of the city, so we don't have police patrolling the halls - we have sweep aides. Think 80 year old retired women with a bad ...
