Practical Dairying [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Practical Dairying Churning G OOD butter can be made from sweet cream . More tlian tbat , it bas been demonstrated that such butter will keep good as long as that made from sour cream , popular conviction to the contrary notwithstanding . It is claimed a slight degree of acid in the cream improves the flavor of the butter . These questions , like many others relating to butter making are so easily tested that butter makers need not take tbe assertion of any one , but can settle it in the own dairies . Most good butter makers prefer the cream to become slightly acid before churning , but the acid should not be carried too far , for if it is , the yield of butter will not be as great , as the acid will consume , to a certain extent , the oil or butter portion of the cream . The cream should be churned at a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees in the summer , and at 60 to 62 degrees in the winter . When milk is set in shallow pans and allowed to stand thirty-six to forty-eight hours at a te...

Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Poultry and Bees Moisture in Incubators M ANY are now running tlieir incubators , some for the first time , and I will offer a few suggestions gathered from my own experience . The conditions in the various makes or Incubators differ so much that no one rule can be laid down , and even in the same make of incubator it would be impossible as localities differ so much . If you wish to know what is the best amount to use , you must study your hatches very carefully , and then apply moisture in such a way as to bring about better results . I received my best hatches by not using any moisture the first week , the second week only a small amount , the third week a little more and on the day they begin to pick a large amount . This must be varied with the season . The makers of the machines can give you better rules for moisture than anyone else , as they understand their machines £ ]__ 6 bettor Too much ventilation will cause the eggs to lose a great amount of moisture . The object of usi...

( Concluded from pace 220 . ) meet with a ready sale if sold at anything near a reasonable figure . I am informed by a party who used to grow a hulless barley in Dakota that he had stopped raising it on account of its shelling off the straw so easily while standing in the field after beginning to ripen and a great objection to it if it generally does so . 2 . Any information on the subject you can give would be greatly appreciated , or if not able to give the information would it be asking too much for you through the columns of your valuable paper to ask if any of the brother readers grow and . can give some information about the above mentioned varieties . 1 . We have never raised any but bearded barley . Have seen samples of the beardless and know of two seedsmen this year that have seed for sale . The Iowa Seed Company , Des Moines , Iowa , have The Ideal . From their description we quote : The heads are large and well filled with large plump kernels , which not only are without...

Senator Tillman ' s Great Speech [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

Senator Tillman s Great Speech ( Continued from page 216 . ) farmers , and , more s the pity , he cares nothing about them . And listen to this : Our farmers , long suffering and patient , struggling ln the race of life with hardest and most unremitting toll , will not fail to see , in spite of misrepresentations and misleading fallacies , that they are obliged , to accept such prices for their products as are fixed in foreign markets , where they compete with the farmers of the world ; that their lands are declining in value while their debts increase ; and that , without compensating favor , they are forced by the action of the Government to pay , for the benefit of others , such enhanced prices for things that they need that the scanty returns of their labor fail to furnish their support or leave no margin for accumulation . I will pause for a minute here to change the phraseology of the above paragraph , so that It will Illustrate with telling emphasis the argument I will use . ...

GOT A BABY BOY NOW [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 15 February 1896

GOT A BABY BOY NOW HAPPINESS IN A SOUTHERN MANS HOME . HEED THE KED FLAG OF DANGER AT THE RAILROAD CBOSSIJTG—A WABNIJSG TO AMERICA S MEN . For twenty-six years I have used tobacco in great quantities , and of late years took to elgarette smoking , wrlttes Mr . W . E . Simpson , of Le Conipte , La . I want to go on record that tobacco has robbed me of many years of life and a great deal of happiness . I realize It now as I compare my feelings and my condition with that of a year ago , when I was a tobacco saturated cigarette fiend . Many and many a time did I try to quit smoking myself Into eternity , but I could not put through a day without suffering extreme nervous torture , which would increase hour by hour till finally , to save myself as It seemed from almost flying to pieces , I had to light the little white pipe-stick and swallow the smoke . One day I read In my paper Don t Tobacco Spit and Smoke Your Life Away , just what I was doing ; It came to me like the warning of the m...
