X / pstarts . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 10 February 1902

X / pstarts . DHE mission of life is to grow auci develop its God-given powers . Those who start the lowest aud are able to work tip are usually given the most credit for having overcome obstacles by worth and work . Sometimes , however , those who have greatness thrust xapon them by marriage or inheritance are most arrogant aucl intolerant in their attitude toward those who get on and , up in life by hard and perpistont hustling . It takes a chambermaid . for instance , who has married into and t > een left a great business to point . with fine scorn to those who have grown to be lomebody by their own exertions , as upstarts . However , only children or inexperienced persons mind being called names . As some great man said : ¦ ¦ • ¦ - • NO GENTLEMAN WILL INSULT ME , A . ND NO OTHER CAN . Let no one discourage you by calling $ ou an upstart . It would be much easier to be a downstart than an upstart . If you are a downstart no one will even take the j ^ toouble . tocallso...

K ^ esult SnobvfaTl . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 10 February 1902

K ^ esult SnobvfaTl . RJjEPORTS of the good done by recent imM snowfalls in the corn belt differ r materially . Iowa has apparently reaped heavy and uniform benefit while in Missouri the depth of the fleecy mantle has varied in different localities . Kansas and Nebraska have both received visitations , but reports are conflicting . There can , however , be no doubt that the snow was belated and that the-growing wheat suffered severely by its late arrival . Nor is it to be doubted that a much heavier fall is needed everywhere . Last summer s scarcity of rain left the soil in a thoroughly parched condition . Springs ceased to flow and creeks dried up , even pretentious streams being reduced to mere rivulets . Of course there is ample time for copious spring rains , but a heavy , general snowfall would relieve rnueh sxisting apprehension . It is a period when snow would be oeautiful in more senses , than the purely poetical .

Shoddy 'Bill Should Tass . j [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 10 February 1902

Shoddy Bill Should Tass . j aHODDY is all right in its way but the demand of the sheep men for the passage of the the Grosvenor bill should be heeded by congress . No one wants to kill off the shoddy industry , but wool producers and consximers should be prbtected from fraud at the hands of the shoddy makers . In other words shoddy should be branded as such that the buyer may know what he is getting . Let shoddy , like oleomargerine , be stamped . Oleo is a clean , healthful product endorsed by the leading scientists of the country ; shoddy is a disease bearer and Stamping means its extinction . If the house , which is discriminating against oleo , Is honest let it pass the shoddy bill without loss of time .

Object to ^ Reciprocity . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 10 February 1902

Object to ^ Reciprocity . The Kansas proposition for reciprocity with Mexico has provoked protests from southwestern live stock Interest * . The The Texas Stockmau and Farmer expresses itself in this style : Governor Stanley and ex-Governor Glick , of Kansas are , it is said , both warm advocates of a reciprocity movement with Mexico having for its object the admission free of duty of Mexican cattle to this country and in return Mexico is to remove the import duty on American butter and pork products . This kind of a trade wonld be all right for Mexico , but it would be a hard blow at the great live stock interests of the country and especially so to Texas . The import duty on Mexican cattle is low enough , and every Texas stockman should resist to the utmost any effort to lower tbe duty and especially any movement looking to the free admission of cattle from that country to tbe United States . This country can sell its surplus butter and pork products to advantage without injury to...
