AMERICAN BERKSHIRE CON -GRESS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

AMERICAN BERKSHIRE CONGRESS . The annual session of the American Berkshire Congress waa held at Springfield , Illinois , Feb . 20-21 , 1907 . The meeting was largely attended by the represer . Native breeders residing in Canada and all portions of the United States . The most successful breeders , exhibitors and sellers of Berkshires presented papers to the Congress on every line of effort , in connection with the swine business , and the large number of prominent breeders present freely participated in the discussion of every topic . The meeting can but give a great impetus to the effective campaign that has been conducted for some years past by the more progressive breeders interested in the further improvement of the breed . A much greater increase in the demand for good Berkshires is likely to follow . A leading feature of the Congress was the enthusiastic exchange of congratulations on the present prosperous conditions and future prospects for still better demand for high-class...

SHEEP NOTES . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

SHEEP NOTES . EXERCISE TOR URl : KI > lMi EWES . There seems to be some difference of opinion as to the value of exercise for breeding ewes . I have had more or less bad luck—better call it poor success , for I have little faith in luck —with lambs , and usually I have the least success when my ewes are confined to the yard all winter , and I have invariably raised a greater percentage of lambs when the ewes had the range of a field during all pleasant days . In a state of nature sheep roam the ranges for their sustenance and the nearer one can get to this condition the stronger and healthier the ewes , and naturally , the smarter and stronger the lamb at birth , and hence the greater the percentage that will survive the critical period and start off all right . I have known instances of remarkable success with a few good , strong grade ewes kept in close confinement all winter but they are the exception , and where a flock of considerable size is kept it is vastly import...

ITHEDAIRYI r __ B _____ K _______________i [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

ITHEDAIRYI r __ B _____ K _______________i ROTATION OF CROPS FOR DAIRY FARMS . One frequently hears the statement , My soil Is too rich for dairy farming . Whether soil can ever reach such a degree of fertility that crops suitable for the maintenance of a dairy herd can not be profitably grown does not matter . In the writers opinion such a condition seldom exists . The fact that in many sections of the country dairying is conducted on land so low in fertility that general farming does not pay , demonstrates the advantage of this type of farming not only to maintain , but when rightfully managed , to Increase the productiveness of the land . Under no system of farm management is less plant food sold off the farm , and no better opportunity is offered to return the fertilizing elements . But careful saving and applying the manure alone to the land will not keep the soil in its highest degree of tilth . That practice is all right as far as it goes , and when combined with a good crop ...

LowTemperature ICREAMSEPARATORSI Ability to SKIM CLEAN at LOW TEMPERATURE is another important consideration in the purchase of a cream separator and one of the chief DIFFERENCES between the DE LAVAL and other makes of separators . The ordinary cream separator is capable of doing reasonably good work only with milk at a temperature of over 80 degrees . When the temperature is lower , the skimming is so fc _| poor thai the loss o £ butter-fat is great , while only a very thin cream can be run , and with most machines the bowl soon clogs and will not skim at all . Farm separation is usually made above 80 degrees , but every user knows that there are frequently times when the milk I must be separated cooler , unless a lot of trouble is gone to in heating it which must injure the quality of the cream and Mm __¦ The superiority of the patent-protected ALPHA-DISC type of bowl construction used in the DE LAVAL machines is such that temperature makes little difference in results . This is s...

STUDY THE FEED PROBLEM . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 March 1907

STUDY THE FEED PROBLEM . I have reports of two recent cases in this neighborhood of investments in bran for cows , with a result in one case of a total loss of the feed and in the other a mere exchange of one dollar for another . I am not acquainted with all the conditions in these two instances , but the great majority of such failures are due to lack of dairy knowledge on the part of the experimenter . He has the wrong kind of cows , buys the wrong kind of feed , or uses poor management in his feeding operations . To get milk and butter it is necessary to have dairy cows . There are a very few good native cows to be found here and there , but there are so few of them that it is worse than useless to try to get a herd of that kind . For every chance of success with such cows there are a dozen chances of sucess with high grades of the real dairy breeds . There are only four dairy breeds — Ayrshire , Guernsey . HolStein and Jersey . It inay as well be learned first as last that a her...
