The Breeding Classes . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910
The Breeding Classes . PROF . W . L . CARLYLE , University of Idaho Judge of Grand Champion Barrows . CHAMPION PEN OF THREE BARROWS . Purdue University , on their under-year pen . CHAMPION BARROW . Sheffield Farm on Matchless Baron 8 th . GRAND CHAMPION BARROW OF ALL BREEDS . Berkshire—Matchless Baron 8 th , owned by Sheffield Farm , Glendale , Ohio . The exhibit in the breeding classes at the 1910 International was not anything like as large as it should have been . This Show is held at a bad time of the year to get out breeding animals in any great numbers . Boars are in service , and really needed at home , or are not in show shape . Sows are also being bred and breeders do not wish to expose their breeding animals to the possible dangers that surround a stock yards show or to the possibility of their catching cold enroute . The International management use every precaution to prevent infection and it is our opinion that it is just as safe to exhibit at the International as it is...

An Opportunity You Should Not Miss . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910
An Opportunity You Should Not Miss . Good herd boars are scarce . Some breeders are compelled to look for months for a boar of Individuality and blood lines that will do to place at the head of a good herd . When such a boar is found , it frequently takes $ 500 to $ 1000 to secure him . Lester Sturm , Vandalla , 111 ., has a son of Rivals Champion out of a daughter of Lord Premiers Rival , and a son of Fairfield Rival out of a daughter of Ideal Masterpiece that he says are extra good . Mr . Sturm is a good Purdue s Robinhood 85421 , owned by Mr . Wm . Osburn , Morris , 111 . breeder and his statement that these boars are really high class deserves attention . He writes us that he will sell them for fully $ 100 . 00 less than they are worth and we trust that some good breeder will not neglect so great an opportunity .
Thirty Good Gilts For Sale [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910
Thirty Good Gilts For Sale The scarcity of good young sows old enough to breed for Spring litters is so great that the mere mention of one party having thirty to sell should interest many Berkshire breeders who are wanting bred sows . It is a fact that there is a scarcity of hogs of all breeds and in all parts of the country and the demand for bred sows will be greater this winter than ever before in the history of swine breeding . The wise man is he who foresees this demand for bred sows and prepares to meet it . McKee Bros ., Versailles , Ky ., are advertising in this issue thirty good gilts of breeding age . For good business reasons they desire to dispose of the entire lot , and this is a rare chance for a profitable deal . We trust that some of our readers will buy the whole lot , ship them home by freight , breed them to a good herd boar , and he will have no difficulty in turning everyone of them at a handsome profit .

Berkshire Banquet . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910
Berkshire Banquet . The following is from the Grundy County Daily Gazette , published at . Morris , III ., the home of our good friend , Mr . Wm . Osburn , Mr . Osburn is a well known Berkshire breeder , who , until-about the last year , was largely interested in Berkshires . He found it necessary to make some changes in his farm management , and for a number of months was not very active in Berkshire circles . He has returned to the fold , an dit is our earnest hope that he will never again stray . We need more such men as Wm . Osburn . But to return to the clipping . Some three years ago we attended the combination sale of Mr . Osburn and the Illinois Berkshire Association held at Morris . The Rev . J . M . Schneider was present at the sale , and when called on for a speech responded readil y with an interesting and witty account of his experience with Berkshires . The reverend gentleman s talk met with such hearty approval by the Berkshire breeders present , that a nice gilt was ...
