THE VESUVIAN TERROR. Vivid Description of Great Erup tion Which Rivals Pom peii's Destruction. The Famous Italian Novelist, Marion Crawford, Tells of the Terrors of the Big Volcano— History of For mer Eruptions. The whole world looked on, awe struck, at the recent fierce outbreak of stupendous and devastating force in the Bay of Naples. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius is believed to be the most destructive since the days of Pom peii, A. D., 79. The whole story of the eruption of 1906 is a sorrowful tale of stricken vic tims, devastated vineyards, ruined homes and terror-stricken, flying peo ple, and it is hard to realize that the same scenes have been enacted there so many times before. Pliny, the noted ancient historian, described the eruption of Vesuvius in the year '79, in a series of letters to Tacitus. This letter described a dark cloud rising in a single pUlar from the crater of the mountain and from this a column spread, and upon it rested a great roof, built by invisible carp...

QUEEN OF FLOWERS. Theme of the Poet and the Artist— the Rose. Roses — queens of the American flower garden: The increasing tendency of people to patronize the rural sections, and the steadily increasing love for flowers, withthe impulse to cultivate the small garden found in the city and the rural homes brings into prominence the flower of kings and of favorites — and of the humblest menial — the rose. It is astonishing what varied types in nature there are of this flower, and how world-wide is its distribution. Wild roses are found from frigid Lap land to tropic India. The rose has the honor of being the first cultivated flower. For a long time It was a rare possession, hut -with the general and active love of nature that is a marked characteristic of the present times much 'his Taeen learned about the cul ture of flowers in general, and of the rose in particular, and its special re quirements are better understood. It 19 of an American traveling in England who, when out walking one day stopped in front of an old English mansion to ad mire it and its surroundings. The depletion of the timber lot and the gradual decrease in the supply of lumber, with the consequent increase in the cost of wood, make the erection of fences on the farm a matter of con cern, for the landholder heretofore has looked upon wood as a proper material for the construction of an effective fence. Metal — that is, fence wire — has almost entirely replaced the rails which at one time were considered necessary to make a fence stock-proof. We still find, however, that timber is, in most localities, the cheapest material for fence posts, though the supply avail able is becoming scarcer each year, and it is possible that in the future it may be necessary in every section A SUBSTANTIAL ROAD GATE. of the country to use posts made of iron or concrete, even as is now done in many places. An essential feature of a rail fence is a comparatively short panel, but now that wire is, in the majority of cases, taking the place of the rail, it is questionable whether as many posts are nece...

Best Dressed Man in the World. >The majority of men believe that the best and most fashionable In men's clothes comes from London; and that the best dressed man "in the world is the American turned out by a London tailor. An American who spends a great part of his time in London, anu is rather a stickler for the correct thing, was recently hailed on Broadway by a friend with the remark, "So that's what they're wearing in London, eh?" The man addressed shook his head. "Suit made in Washington, overcoat in New York," he said. "Thought you were togged out from Bond Street, sure," in a disappointed tone. Then the man who lives much in Lon don made this radical announcement: "They can't make a sack suit in Eng land. You ask a Bond Street tailor for an American business suit with an American fit, and he turns out a NEW FRENCH MOTOR RAILROAD TRUCK. coat that gives you a caved-in chest when it's buttoned up and a decidedly open front when it's unbuttoned."
