A LUCIFER MATCH PROBLEM Which Celebrated Architect* and Kminent Contractor* Hare Failed to Solve. W h£n. after a friendly dinner, you desire to favor your guests with a little magic at Lome, you can introduce the problem of the three lucifer matches. With your penknife slit one end of a match and trim that of an other into a wedge shape. Insert this lat ter into the split end of the former, so that the two shall form an acute angle. Place them on the table, the angle upward, and prop them Tip by leaning another match against them, the whole forming a tripod, as shown in the figure. THE THREE LUCIFER MATCHES. Now hand a fourth match to one of the company anil request him to lift with it the other three from the table. Such is the problem to be solved. The diagram on the left Indicates the solution. It Would Kg pel Our Gold and Gold Paper and Cause a Disastrous Panic—Result of Having Two Dollars of Different Val ues—Evils of a Silver Basis. In an address, delivered at Bay View, Mich., Senator Burrows of Michigan vigorously opposed the free coinage fal lacy and upheld our present flnunoial system.
