POPULAR SCIENCE. Bra Guns. The Prussians flatter themselves that they have the most powerful guns in the world in the re cent specimens added to their artillery as siege guns. Their performances are remarkable. 'With a charge of 125 pounds of powder they project a cast iron shell of 600 pounds with an initial velocity of 1606 feet per second, which is said to have never "been attained be fore by any rifled (ran. HOUSEHOLD HINTS. Castob Oil for Corns. The South ern Medical Record Bays that castor oil applied to the com, after paring closely, each night before goiiig to bed, softens the corn, and it becomes as the other flesh. Good Fried Cakes. Take one cup of sugar, two eggs, one tablespoonful of batter, one teaepoonful of soda, two teaspoonfuls of cream tartar, one cup sweet milk, and stir in flour until thick enougn. Snowtlake. Cream. The Tatrons of IIunhaudry organized a state grange at Montgomery, Ala., last week, every part of the etate being represented. O. T. Brooks, late president of the Mer chant's national bank at Petersburg, Va., charged with embezzling the funds of the bank, has been held in $15,000 bail to appear before the U. 8. district court. - -At a mass meeting of farmers and Tatrons of Husbandry, held at Atlanta, Ga., recently, they resolved to plant only one-third then crop next year in cotton, to favor cash pay ment, and declare their right .to control the price of cotton. On Tuesday last the prisoners In Clarks ville, Aik., jail overpower edthe guards and took possession of their arms. The alarm was given before they got out, and the citizens of the town surrounded the jail. One of the prisoners, Bid Wallace, sentenced to be hung, fired a double-barrel shot gun at two citizens iu the street, severely if not fatally...

All hu man earthly interests are hooted up and buttoned together and held up by clothes. The Mobax3 of Clothes. There are certain moralists in the -world -who labor under the impression that it is no matter what people wear, or how they put on their apparel. Such people cover themselves up, they do not dress. No one doubts that the mind is more im. portant than the body, the jewel than the setting ; and yet the virtue of the one and the brilliancy of the other are enhanced by the mode in which they are presented to the senses. Let the woman have every virtue under the sun, if sho is slatternly, or even inappropri ate in her dress, her merits will be more than half obscureJ.
