Joshua P. Bnllttt, Jr., for Mayor. Judge H. A. W. Skecn, after filling the office of Mayor for two terms, has deter? mined to retire, and Joshua F. Bullitt, Jr., bas yielded to the wishes of the commu? nity and consented to become a candidate for the office. Judge Skeen has made a faithful and conscientious official and re? tains the unabated confidence of his constituents. It is fortunate that one so eminently fitted for the position as Captain Bullitt consents to offer for the.officc. No one in the community, or out of it for that matter, would make a better Mayor. As captain of the police force he has displayed a degree of courage, of coolness and a soundness of judgment that have rarely been found combined in a single, individual. If,the office should go as a recognition of his valuable ser? vice to the city in this capacity, it could not fall on worthier shoulders. If it; should go to one because of Iiis capacity, I his unflinching devotion to duty, his in? tegrity of purpose a...

III? row-ivnw. * The KepubHcft?H IVtcet at Cincinnati to Form a National League and Open the Presidential Campaign. (Cincinnati Special.) President Harrison sent a letter of re- j grct to the Convention of Republican | Clubs in which he said: "I regret that I shall be unablo-to at? tend the convention or to give by letter any extended counsel. Conventions of the Republican party and the legislation of the last Congress have, however, very clearly defined and very courageously presented the issues upon which the next contest must be waged. To those conven? tion declarations I give the assent of deep conviction and to the important legisla? tion of the last Congress my earnest support. If the people of the United States will now give the world to under? stand that the protection and enlargement of our domestic industries, the extension of our foreign trade by reciprocity ar? rangements not inconsistent with a pro? tective policy, and the revival of our mer? chant-marine by methods tha...
