STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA. FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 10, 1864 VV. J. COWING,.., Principal Editor. 8. W. GIX.LIS Associate Editor The irfcsult. Our readers will remember with what confidence we have predicted the renomination of Mr. Lincoln at the Baltimore Convention, and with what earnestness we have endeavored to secure that result, We did so for no partisan purposes, but because we saw that the interests of the nation demanded it. Today we have the gratification of knowing that all danger of a division in the counsels of the Union party is past, and that, without a change of administration, the whole resources and strength of the country will he free to prosecute the war for four years longer, if necessary, to perpetuate our institutions and government. This complete union of sentiment throughout the loyal portion of the country, in regard to the manner and object of carrying on the war, and the men by whom the government shall meanwhile be administered, is one of the greatest victori...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA: Wf; , —* MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 13, 1864, VV. J. COWING, Principal Editor. B. W. GH.I.IS Associate Editor Repeal of the S3OO Exemption Clause We rejoice to see that the government is about to abolish the S3OO Exemption clause of the Enrolment Act. It has already lost the country tens of thousands of the very men who, of all men, ought to be made to go into the field. We do not want copperhead money.; we want their bodies as targets for rebel sharpshooters. It is infinitely unjust and cruel that the law should have the effect to allow these gentlemen to remain at home to oppose the government, while good Union men are obliged to expose their valuable and honorable lives in the field. Let us give the copperheads at least an equal share ol the dangers and hardships they have so materially assisted in bringing upon the people, and which by their unpatriotic action during the war they have been nil along endeavoring to increase and prolong. The nation will not be...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 14, 1864 VV. J. COWING... Principal Editor. B. W. CHUMS .Associate Editor FOB PRESIDENT ABRAHAIfI LINCOLN, OF'ILLINOIS. FOR VICE PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON, OP TENNESSEE. Conservatism versus Radicalism Conservative, in its primary signification, is simply preservative. Radical means going to the root, or to the bottom of the matter. Those are therefore the true conservatives, who woald preserve old institutions unchanged ; and those are radicals, who in the effort to effect a refofm would go to the bottom of the evil, and do the work of reformation thoroughly. There has been a time when conservatism and radicalism as applied to the politics of this country, meant totally different things, the one being applicable alone to those who would preserve the form of government established by our forefathers, and the ether being the proper designation of those who would utterly subvert and overthrow those institutions in order to incorporate into...
