4. - Once a debt always a debt until paid is my maxim. Gentlemen I am a candidate for Congress and can beat any man in the field. I intend to run ia good earnest. I came from Virginia where the white man sat in the shade if lie liked and the negro labored in the field where the race horse is reared and the mocking bird sings all night long. I am a Virginian but not of that numerous class vlio are related td all the first families. I ploughed in Virginia and I mean to plough in the political field of Texas. Gentlemen it is my-privilege to be a candidate. It is your privilege to vote : and you vote under a great responsibility. I only ask you to weigh well the merits and qualifications of the candidates and cast your vote for the man who can serve you best" I intend to run the race to visit the people and I will at least see the " beauty" of the country. I will meet my opponents and I expect to be improved by the contest. I have but one language to speak and I ask the editors to repor...

h f v Learn to Cook "Well. We again propose this advice to those of our young female friends who may chance to look into this journal. There need be no scruple on the ground that the aim is not sufficiently high for a generous and cultivated mind. To do well whatever it becomes our duty to do at all is an ambition sufficiently elevated for the highest and most gifted spirit. The care of the family will be the duty of the woman till we all get translated to a higher sphere of exis- tence and family care will always as now be made up of details small in themselves 'tis true but in the aggregate and in their connections vastly important. Wc say then learn to cook ivcll. The health of the family depends upon it Wc s know there are those who associate luxury effe- juukiuj .nu ;m ucpenuent ins with every attempt of the kind recommended. But we do not believe that health is promoted by eating raw carrots or doughy bread or that to secure long life it is necessary to turn cannibal. Nor were...

t. h u S ' V 4 Texas "G.EoaRA.rinc and Histobic." Some of our country contemporaries occasionally furnish us with an interesting article on this topic ; but wo think tho fol- lowing from the Albany Knickerbocker nicks them all It is not very complimentary; but we nil like to hear what Mrs. Grundy has to say whether in praiso or derision : " First Class in Panthology. I 'Texas is bounded on the North by the-North Pole Mason and Dixon's line and the California jrold-diggin's ; on the East by Sunrise ; on the South by Morse's Patent and Howland and Aspin- wall's Rail Road when it is completed ; and on the West by the Puttybottomy Injuns; which as r they won t keep quiet makes a' very uncertain and disputed boundary indeed. J ji" Amendment op the Constitution. But little attention has tints far been manifested by the peo- ple of Texas in regard to the proposed amendment to the constitution upon which they will have to vote at the ensuing election. The proposition which they arc to decide is as follows : That the constitution of the State be so altered that the Judges of the Supreme Court Judges of the Dis- trict Courts Attorney General District Attorneys Comptroller of Public Accounts Treasurer of the State and the Commissioner of the General Land Office shall hereafter be elected by the people. Should these amendments be sustained by the vote of a majority of the people it will still require two thirds of the Legislature to confirm them. That majority however would probably follow should the popular vote indicate a desire on the part of the public for the proposed change. Galveston Civilian. A New Question.
