s Southwest Ckineie Journal NOVEMBER 1, 1976 RON LOU.. - A Houston Oiler By Judy Lee Mr. David Louie and longtime faithful Oiler fan Mr. Homer Ng first brought the fact to my attention: the Houston Oilers have a Chinese center on their offensive team. The news, I learned later, was not really new, for Ron Lou had played with the Oilersfor the 1973 and '7^ seasons, going to Phil- adelphia to play with the Eagles in 1975, and now back with the Houston Oilers for the '76 season. Ron Lou is 25 years old, 6' 2", and 2^21bs., and if I wanted an interview with him I was to wait at the Oiler train- ing camp on Fannin at Braeswood after their practise session. Although our meeting in person was only long enough to set up a telephone interview, I knew that I would be comfortable talking to him. It really didn't matter that 1 know almost nothing about football because, as he told me later, "I pre- fer people not to know that I play football. I'd rather be known as Ron Lou than as a football pl...

10 Souiliwetf Chinese Journal NOVEMBER 1, 1976 Dk. W *34ay* by Jmtt Ow*/ JLu>+q> You in your lifetime have evolved through many changes, and now the sexual revolution. Social changes can either defeat us, or with God's help, strengthen us, in a growth experience, from which we rise victorious. In a sermon, given by Dr. Charles L. Allen, pastor of First Methodist Church...a man...Saint Luke... amongst all of Christ's disciples, was the first women's libber! Saint Luke placed women in high regard, respected them, loved them, cared for them...mentally, physic- ally, spiritually...in a time in history, when women were valued for no more than chattel...a horse, a donkey, to be sold into slavery. You, who are readers of the Southwest Chinese Journal remember, that for centuries, a male child meant the extension of the family name...a female child...did not. The male was a prized creation. Before the machine age, America was a farming nation, women worked in the fields, raised large ...

"Supernatural powers...was it not Billy Graham who spoke of the necessity of supernatural powers for living in today's world," I inquired. "Yes, many are turning to the charismatic," replied Amy. "Do you remember the story of the "Sound of Music" . I am to meet personally, Maria von Trapp, the inspiration for this musical story. You know, she is a Charismatic Christian. So many have turned to this way of salvation...Dr. Katherine Hsu...Cath- erine Marshall, Fat Boone...many well known and un- known in all denominations, Catholics and Protestants alike. 12 Southwest Clii ncsc Journal NOVEMBER 1, 1976 Houston's Chinese Baptist Church a visit with Rev. and Mrs. Lok Tin Cheung by June Dove Leong "I would like to read about Rev. and Mrs. Lok-Tin Cheung, of our largest Chinese church in Houston," requested lovely St. Thomas coed Judy Lee, daughter of our publishers. A call to the pastor and his wife, opened doors for ray visit to the Chinese Baptist Church, located on a beautiful acre plot of land, a million dollar facility on Brogden. Justly proud, is this Christian couple, of their new church, once located in much smaller downtown quarters. "Visiting preachers have come and have told us, this is the best Chinese church in the United States," said Lydia Cheung enthusiastically. Both gave Dr. Joyce Fan credit, for it was she who was chairman of the building fund. 13 Soutliwest Chi mese Journal NOVEMBER 1, 1976 A FRIEND OF THE CHINESE Elizabeth Moore (Mrs. Harvin C.) by June Dove Leong Wise owls peer from the fence, as you enter the front yard. Cn the door, a knocker, and the request, "ilease knock". After knocking, a maid opens the door to permit entrance. She calls upstairs, and in a few minutes, Mrs. Moore enters, eager to tell the story of COSERV, Community Services for International Visitors to the U. S. As she speaks, one comes to realize, here is a woman of great capabilities, interested in friendship on a global concept. From 1972 to '76, Krs. Harvin C. Moore, Elizabeth, to her many friends, served as President of the Houston- Taipei Sister City Committee. Another caller at the door. A messenger to deliver a beautiful floral arrangement. He leaves.
