In the summer of 1862, when Generals McClellan and Joe Johnston were com- manding the two opposing armies in the attack and defense of Richmond, a freak of fate or decreo of destiny ordered a singular coincidence in the situation of the Morthern and Southern cadets. Custer was acting on Geneval McClel- lan's staff, and his former friend on that of General Johnston, each as aid to the commanding Generals of the Northern and Southern armies. On the day of the battle of Seven Pine*, or Fair Oaks, theCoufederaie ootnmandor was severe- ly wounded by a shell, and his place afterwards filled by General Lee. The same Johnston's young aid was captured by the enemy while in the dis- charge of his duty, and taken toMeClel- lan's headquarters as a prisoner of dis- tinction. He had been known to the Federal General when at West Point, and being co...

On the ioth of December last a Danish vessel nearly stranded on an island about 140 miles from the Straits of Magellan. No land was indicated 011 the chart. Soon it was noticed that the island was slowly .sinking. An attempt was made to land 011 it, but this was found impos- sible, as the rocky mass of which it was composed was so hot that the water touching it hissed. The island continued to sink, and eight hours af- ter it was first observed the vessel sailed over the place wher...
