I POPULATION 4,500. Vol. IV.—No. 15 Thurber, Texas: Saturday, October 28, 1899. Whole No. 171. GENERAL FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES George B. Loving of Fort Worth, who is in New York City, says the formation of his big cattle company is progressing sat- isfactorily. A dispatch from Waukegan, 111., says that as a result of the scarcity of cars and consequent short supply of coal, the Ameri- can Steel & Wire Co.'s factory had to close down the past week. The mines at Spring Valley, 111., are idle owing to a strike. This is due to some misunderstanding between the general man- ager of the Spring Valley Coal Co. and the officia...

2 TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. President Steyn has issued a proclamation annexing British territory along the western border of the Free State. The re- gion claimed includes Griqualand and the area between the \ aal and the Orange rivers, including Kimberley. President Kruger will issue a proclamation annexing the vast region north of the Vaal river, including Bechuanaland and probably Rhodesia. The claim follows the invasion of the Boer troops into these regions. Councilman Reilly of Cleveland, Ohio, has received word that he had fallen heir to $80,000. He received a letter last Sat- orday from San Antonio, Texas, telling him he had been left money by a farmer named Wallace, residing at Palmer, whose life he saved when at San Antonio some years ago. Wallace was mixed up in a runaway, and in stopping the team Reilly hurt his right arm badly. Since he went north he received several letters from Wallace. The latter was childless and left to Reilly his valuable estate. According to ...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. 3 How Uncle Zeb Was Baptized. As a direct consequence of the failure of the cotton crop in Erath County and the country tributary to Thurber there has been quite an influx to the big coal camp of farmers and others seek- ing employment at the brick plant and other industries whereby they may provide a livelihood for their families. So large, in fact, has been the number of newcomers that dwelling houses have become a scarce commodity, which at once set the "boss wood butcher" to work in a hurry. However, a large per cent, of the strangers, either from choice or through necessity, have pitched their tents or backed a wagon under a postoak tree for several miles out the Stephenville road, at and beyond the up- per end of the big lake. Among those encamped not a great way from the wagon bridge over Gibson Branch is an honest old negro couple, who came from near Stephenville, and are fa- miliarly known as "Uncle" Zeb and "Aunt" Deliah. Uncle Zeb, so those...

Entered at the Post Office at Thurber, Texas, as Second-Class Mail Matter. Thurber, Texas: Saturday, October 28, 1899. Every newspaper in the State should take up the question of water development in the West. What benefits any one section will benefit the whole State, and what benefits the State will ben- efit the whole West, and what benefits the West will benefit the entire country, the Eastern oppositionists to the contrary not- withstanding. The more development and industry in the West the more supplies will be required from the East in the line of manufactures, while at the same time the West will consume or ship to the Orient practically all of its own agricultural pro...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. KEEPING COWS FOR PROFIT. 6 i TT7^EEPING Cows for Profit" is the well-chosen title of the newest work on practical dairying to come under our notice. We understand that a large issue of this little publication is being gratuitously circulated with the com- pliments of The DeLaval Separator Company, New York, wThich concern offers to send a copy to every reader of The Journal upon request. The book treats of dairying as a manufacturing business, and discusses its problems from the standpoint that every dairy farmer is just as much a business man as though engaged in any other manufacturing or commercial undertak- ing. It is compiled in a terse, practical manner, easily reada- ble, and can hardly fail to be interesting and instructive to every one in any way concerned in dairying. It is splendidly printed, handsomely illustrated, and altogether pleasing. The front cov- er shows a lithographed milking scene, and the back cover a cut of the Jersey cow, Ida...
