Page 8 - Section A - THE SACHSE NEW.S - Thursday March 10, 2005 Felix congratulates governor on state award By Patty Montagno Mayor Mike Felix, along with sev- eral other Texas mayors, attended last week's ceremony in Austin when Governor Rick Perry accepted the Prestigious 2004 Governor's Cup. "The recognition was awarded by Site Selection Magazine because Texas was named the top state in the nation for job creation announce- ments," Perry said. According to Perry, Texas last won the award in 1992, when it shared the award with North Carolina. Texas also won the award in 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1982. This year's win brings a record six wins to Texas, more than any other state. "The 12-year drought is officially over, and the Governor's Cup has come home to Texas," Perry said. "We have pursued a path of limit- ed government, fiscal restraint and made unprecedented investments in job creation." Site Selection Magazine noted: "The Governor's Cup returns to the Lone Star State, which demo...

Page 2 - Section B - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday March 10, 2005 is Sports Lady Mustangs deliver needed shutout By Ryan Jones The Sachye Lady Mustangs Softball team only had one game this past week, and evidently, the ladies decided to focus less on the quantity and pay more atten- tion to the quality of play as they shut out Sulphur Springs 2-0. Coach Cade Smith described the Lady Mustangs' outing as, "our best game of the year by far." With the district opener right around the corner, it definitely would be an opportunistic time for a team to be playing well. Katie Pipes was the winning pitcher with an excellent outing. The team also played strong defense overall using a few clutch double plays to get out of the innings. The first double play was early in the game in the bottom of the first inning. The leadoff hitter was retired before reaching base, but the second batter in Sulphur Springs' rotation managed to reach base on a hit to left center. The next batter hit a line drive dir...

Page 4 - Section B - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday March 10, 2005 Sports Despite rain, Lady Pirates win 3 of 4 in home tournament By Brian Honea The Wylie Lady Pirates Softball team was not playing for a place in the Fifth Annual Tana Jo Thomason Memorial Tournament when they took on North Mesquite Saturday. But one would never have known by the way they played and by the excit- ing finish they produced. Taylor Call smashed a walk-off three-run home run over the left field fence to give Wylie a 5-2 win over North Mesquite and give the Lady Pirates a 3-1 record for the tourna- ment. The bracket had to be changed several times because of the cancella- tion of much of Friday's action due to the rain. Because of the way the bracket fell - Wylie's only loss in the tournament was 1-0 to Odessa - Wylie did not get to play in the cham- pionship game despite having beaten Odessa 1 -0 earlier in the tournament. Odessa and Denison played for the championship late Saturday night. For a while, it l...

Page 6- Section A - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday, March 17, 2005 Education Interviewing older generations helps WHS youth discover similarities By Matthew Riley Learning from older generations isn't always easy for high school students. The students in Jill Torres' speech classes were issued that challenge earlier this school year. The project, which is called the Decade speech by Torres, was orga- nized with help from Wylie High School teacher Allen Morris. According to Torres, the idea was one spawned by Morris, who thought students would gain a bet- ter understanding of people in their 30s and older. "Allen Morris sat down with the teachers and others about what important lessons in life they had learned, their regrets, their memo- ries, and what life was like for them when they were the age of the inter- viewers," Torres said.
