ANNUAL HOSPITAL BAL?: A HUGE SUCCESS--TAKINGS EXCEED £94. The Alexandra District hospital Ball on Friday night last was an out standing success. Held in the Shire Hall, it attracted people from all cor ners of the district, and quite a few beyond those confines, IMarysville be ing particularly well represented. The stage of the hall pr'csented a most picturesque appearance, being tastefully embellished with fern fronds and colored balloons. The music for dancing was sup plied by Frank Whittaker's orchestra, a combination which won favorable comment from all patrons for its per feet rhythm, melody and liberal en cvores. Yes, it can safcly be said that this hand was a decided acquisition, and its engagement redounds to the credit of the organisers' discernment. Mr. Les Clarke was a capable com pore, and kept things moving brightly. BIGGER SUBSIDY TO BUSH NURSING HOSPITALS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 12 August 1949

IIGGER SUBSIDY TO BUSII NURS ING IIOSPITALS. Bush nursing hospitals, which have played such a signal part in catering for the needs of the people in centres where the residents have been un able to 'support a general or base hos pital, have received a greater meas ure of assistance than ever before. This is shown in a statement that has been issued by the Premier (Mr. I-loll way). in 1943-44 these worthy institutions were given a subsidy of only £10,000. Ti:s was increased to £20,000 the fol lowing year, to £25,000 in 1945-46, but in the next year, owing to the 1946 grant not being fully expended, no grant was allotted. In 1947-48 £30,000 was voted, but this has been nearly doubled during the present year-£50,000. It is interesting to note that in this province the following grants have been paid to bush nursing hospitals by the present Government: Benalla, £800; Bright, £700; Euroa, £800; Myrtleford, £700; Nagambie, £800; Rutherglen, £900; Violet Town, £700; Walwa, £800; Yackandand...

Alexandra meet Mansfield at Euroa to-morrow in the first semi-final. On Saturday, August 20th, Thot nton-Acheron Valley meet Broadford, at Yea, in the second semi-final. Seymour by being defeated by Euroa last Saturday lost their position in the final four on per centage by a very small margin. The Euroa "Advertiser" writes: "The competition is so even that it is rather rash to make a proph. ecy, but our vote goes to Alexan dra (if they make the four) as their exhibition of football here was the best we have seen this season. The case, in which V. Hewitt, of Alexandra, was reported by the umpire for striking G. Deas (T.A.V.) at Alexandra-T.A.V. match at Alexandra, was heard at Seymour before the special tribunal. Hewitt was found guilty and stood down for four matches. Deas was reported for retaliation and deliberate striking. He was f...

The Big Eildon. Questions In Federnl House. In the I-louse of Representatives on June these questions were asked by Mr. Winton G. T'urnbull, M.H.R. for Wimmera: Mr. Turnbull: Has the Prime Minis ter been advised that the Victorian Government has approved the en largement of the Eiloon Reservoir on the oulburn River in Victoria, at an approximate cost of £10,000,000? Is it a fact that completion of this project would increase the population capacity of Australia by at least 250,000? Has a dollar allocation for this work been requested by the Victorian Govern ment? Does the Prime Minister favor such an allocation for this necessary national work If not, could the pro ject be financed in any other way; for instance, through the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation or J by use of International Bank credit? THANKS. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 12 August 1949

THANKIS. To the Editor. Sir,-For just on eighteen years I have represented the Alexandra dis trict in the Iouse of Representatives, possibly a record in Alexandra rclpre sentation. During that time I have endeavored to give the highest public service- certainly disinterested - and . from time to time have withstood without serious challenge many conflicts. On this occasion, from different points of view-personal, public and medical I have retired from the contest for the House of Representatives. I had offered my services as a candidate for pre-selection for the Senate, a Ilous: which I believe with proportional rep resentation can he a coming and pos sibly a dominating I-louse. My col leagues, with whom I have served so long, thought that from different as pects I could be an acquisition there, seeing that at the moment only three out of the total of thirty-six members are non-Socialist, and that because of present Government legislation, no matter how the people speak at the next ...
