Volcanic Activity. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

Volcanic Activity. Latest advices state that the active volcano ou North Savaii still con tinues to flow its lava, which has now reached the sea in two places, and is advancing still in another direction. No one can predict upon any data that we have when this flow will ccasc. Until recently no harm was done, but much useful land and some small acreage of cultivation on North Savaii has been permanently destroyod. That is, they lie under from 10 to 20 feet of solid lava. A number of houses were burned as the lava flood passed along. This erup tion opened its crater about 15 miles to the castward'of the previous out burst in 1902, thus showing that the north side of Savaii is pretty well honeycombed with internal disturb ances. Previous to the break out three years ogo, thero had been no eruption within the recollection of the oldest inhabitant, and so far as tradition can be depended on, at least 150 years of quietude had elapsed during the interval of rest. The sight presented to t...

Bush Manners. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

?Bush Manners. [Bv Aegis in Casino Cfutrier:] City people know s.lmost as littlev'^^^^(M about their country cousins as Eng- ' l:sh people know about Australians. i To thfiir fastidious minds we are a . vulgar set, whose strong taint of J piggeries would make our presence - extremely distasteful in their dainty j drawing-rooms. Possibly ! But it j is safe to add that we should not be j nearly so awkwardly situated as j would the city hostess if.porclied 011 the back of our friskiest horse. And ' H if our manners lack polish we cer- m tainly possess the true spirit of hos- V pitality, and no guest in our ' best ^ parlour ' would be allowed to feel un welcome. |HB Very true — and creditable. But it is to our discredit that we of the country are far too careless about our manners. It is unpardonable, as we 4HHH have no right to complain, of the heartiness of our city welcome, if we IH9 behave so awkwardly as to cause embarrassment to our hostess. If we will not take the trouble to beha...

Heat and Thirst. [Newspaper Article] — Mullumbimby Star — 10 February 1906

Heat and Thirst. At the inquest at Warren on the bodies of the children Walsh, who died in the bush from heat and thirst, Mrs. Walsh deposed that she went to her mother's, Mary Mathieson, eight miles distant from home, with the children. Sho had driven her mother's horse. 'When there a row started over some horses. Tho mother said, ' Take my horse out of the sulky. Go where you like.'2' 1 '' ~ ? She took the horse out, gave the children a drink, and 'started for home, pulling the sulky. She left it two miles away, and started to walk. She lost her way, and left the eliildron in some timber, and brought water a mile and a half from a tank on the plain in hor boots for them.
