LATE ENGLISH INTELLIGENCE. TO THE 25TH OCTOBER. Miscellaneous. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 18 March 1848

LATE ENGLIS- INTELLIGENCE. To THE, 25TH OCTOBER. Miscellaneous. It was said that Sir George Larpent   was about to proceed to India with the view of preventing, if possible, the stop- page of the Calcutta branch of the house of Cockerell and Co. At a recent meeting at Conciliation Hall, Mr. John O'Connell renewed his repeated promise that Ireland should shortly be a nation; and he gave notice of a motion to expel Mr. Charles O'Connell, a relative of his own, from the Hall. Sir Charles Coote, Bart., the Eight Ho- nourable Lord Chief Justice Doherty, and the Right Hon. John Cam Hobhouse were to be elevated to the peerage. The Commerce publishes a letter from Southern Russia, which states that the cholera has made frightful ravages in that country. The entire population has been swept off in some districts, a fact unpre- cedented even in the years 1831 and 1832. Six physicians have been sent from War- saw for the scene of those calamities, with a mission to study the disea...

The Lords' Report on Colonization. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 18 March 1848

The Lords' Report on Colonization. About the middle of last year, the House of Lords appointed a select com- mittee " to consider the means by which colonization may be made subsidiary to other measures for the improvement of the social condition of Ireland, and by which, with full regard to the interest of the colonies themselves, the comfort and prosperity of those who emigrate may be effectually promoted." The report, with voluminous minutes of evidence, has been printed; and we have just received a copy of it. Their Lordships examined no less than forty two witnesses, amongst whom were various gentlemen connected respectively, with the North American and Australian colo- nies. Our fellow colonists will be glad to hear, thal'the latter formed a considerable proportion, being twelve in number, and most, if not all, of them well qualified, by local experience, to give information as to the resources and wants of New South "Wales and the sister province. We give their names Lieut.-C...
