RHAPSODIES BY MOONLIGHT. Your Owl on the Stump. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 3 September 1869

RAPSODIES BY DMvOONLIGHT: BY A OLnD OWL. Your Owl on the Stump. I have recently been enjoying the dolcj far dienon, and you and others appeared to have taken dudgeon thereat. Now, do be reason able, my dear Ensign. Everybody has his hour of relaxation. Why should not I have mine. LaZ rol s'amute--even the king tales a spreeo. And is it not on record-aye, chro nicled by Toady .Boswell-that. the sublime Samuel, the incomparable Johnson, once at least went' on the "racket?" You will 'flnodthe fact related at p. 190, octavo editioni of Boswell, that Beauclerk and Langton, returning drunk from the tavern, knocked up the doctor and hosought him to' join them 'in a ramble. " What, is it , ou, you dogs)" cried the lexicographer, "I'll have a frisk with you." And daccordingly he abandoned his couch and went forth at a most unholy hour to drunkenness and depravity. You ire at a loss to understand the 'object of this apologetic preface. Well, I will be explicit. I have been on the'spree, and a...

MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 3 September 1869

MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. A special meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday last, to receive the valuation and estimates for the ensuing year. There were present Dr. Rowe (President), and Crs. Tomkins, Baldry, and Kitchen. And apology from Cr. Cotter, assigning a reason for his absence, was read. The President spoke at some length upon the statement before the Council. The proceedings were but formal, although a good deal of conversation took place. The President said he had given the matter mature consideration, paying especial regard to the economy which could be effected by reducing the salaries of offiers, and to some extent by adopting the policy of making such main roads as would entitle them to the Go vernment subsidy. He suggested and pro posed the striking of a rate of 1s. 3d. in the pound, and thought unless that were done, it would be an absolute impossibility to effect the works required throughout the district. Cr. Baldry thought it would be an injustice to ratepay...

The Benalla Ensign. Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, SEPT. 3, 1869. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 3 September 1869

Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, SEPT. 3, 1869. What has become of the Railway Construction Bill, which ivas promised us so. soon as the Land Bill was disposed of ? That measure baa passed to another place more than a week, And yet no slgn is mado to show us that we "are any nearer the realisation of our day dream now than we were some months ago. We- candidly confess that we have been greatly disappointed with regard to the action of the Government on this question, and in stead of believing, as we did, that Ministers wero really desirous of carrying out the ex pressed wish of Parliament, and push on   with the works at once, we are being forced into the belief that it is not the intention of the Government to begin the scheme this year.   to1 At all events, the delays that have taken place ow form in themselves a sufficient justification for the doubts we entertain as to the sincerity of the Executive in energetically prosecuting the North-Eastern Railw...

DRY CREEK. ,FnoiM sui owSS N cotitnSPONDENT.) Scptemnber 2. So the Golcondlsl Diamond. Gold, and 'in ilining Company is a' failure or, inmother words, thcro were not a sufficient number of shares applied for to induce tite directors to proceed with the undertaking; this is much to be regretted, because it is almost certain that the affair would have been remunera tive had the necessary amount of capital been subscribed. A claim considered by miners valuable for gold alone, which has already yielded more Ipreciousle stones than any other piece of grcund in Victoria, and which con tains all the concomitants which usually nc company the diamond, inducing a reasonable belief that that most precious gem would also b's found, presented greater probabilities of success than is generally to be foundl in mniningventurts; and had one'crnmpnny been successful others would soon have been started, thereby doing an infinity of good throughout the whole district.
