SNEERING [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 27 May 1876

SNEERING {Liberal lieview.) A book might be written on the question 'how to sneer,' and such a book would, no doubt, be acceptable to a large number of persons, for the art of ' sneering, though imperfectly understood, is widely practised. At present the sneering fraternity do a !*reat deal of work, but the amount which they get through is small compared with what they would accomplish if they reduced their pursuit to a science. As it is, it is to be feared that they stand pretty much in the position of guerillas, who fight for their own hands, and thus are not enabled to act so effectively against the enemy as they might if they worked in concert with their fellows. Being what they are, people who are satis fied with scarcely anything- and who are ever engaged in picking holes in their neighbours' coats, those who like to see men and women reminded that they are not perfect may possibly experience regret when they reflect that the great army of sneerers have not learned the advanta...

We take tho following from the columns of the Sydney Morniwj Herald-. — 'In these day's when alcoholic liquors aro so largely con sumed, and consumers are so much in doubt whether their systems arc not being gradually impaired by adulteration, it is well that one, at least, of the popular beverages of tho period is reliable as pure — that is, Wolfe's Aromatic Schiedam Schxapps. After making reasonable deductions from the varied and many active and neutralising virtues it is said to possess, it is something to be assured by physicians and other of the scientific cognosconti that we have in this article a genuine extract which taken in moderate quantity, and under healthy condition of body, affords a beneficial stimulus to the animal functions, and even if taken in excess leaves but a minimum of the inevitable evils of abuso. The fact that in the latter respect it is incomparably superior to tho mass of other liquors of alike class is attributed to the entire absenco of fusel oil ; it...

SCHOOL OF ARTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 27 May 1876

SCHOOL OF ARTS. A meeting of members and others interested in onr School of Arts, as convened by. adver tisement, was held in the reading-room, on Thursday evening last. There was a fair attendance, and R. M. Vaughn, Esq., who occupied the chair, as President of the institu tion, briefly stated the objects for which the meeting had been called. A committee and officers had been electod in February, 1875, according to the rules, but they had never met, and were new virtually out of office, and ho thought that it would be best to have a fresh election. ? Mr. Easton thought that it was evidently the better plan to commence de novo, and proposed ' That all now present enrol them selves as subscribers,' which was seconded by Mr. Boland, and carried. All present here signified their intention of becoming members, and subscriptions were at once handed in. Mr. Olson thought that the subscription should be reduced from 20s to 10s per annum, which would have the effect of increasing the numbe...

CRICKET. GRENFELL V. YOUNG. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 27 May 1876

CRICKET. Gren'Fell v. Young. This match was played at Young on Queen's Birthday, and resulted in a victory for tho former. From a telegram from the Secretary of our local club, which was posted outside our office on Thursday morning, we learn that our men inade 103 in their first innings and 36 in their second, while their opponents only made 57 and 63 respectively, the Grenfellites thus winning by 19 runs. The scoring book not I having come to hand as yet, we are unable to give the scores in this issue ; but we hear from private sources that the match became most exciting towards tho close. Waitgli made ihe top score of 25 in the first innings for Grenfell, while J. Nelson went in first and carried hisbat out for 36 for the Young side. A panic must have ensued amongst our men in the second innings, for they were all disposed of — all but two being caught, — for small scores. The losers, starting against the three figures of their oppo nents' first innings, played a very plucky up-*...

COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS AT GRENFELL. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 27 May 1876

COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS AT GRENFELL. On the 31st March last, Mr. James Watson moved in the Legislative Assembly that there be laid upon the table of the House ' Copies of any petition, reports, correspon dence, and minutes thereon, having reference to the application for a Court of Quarter Sessions at Grenfell, a copy of which, the same having been ordered to be printed on the 2nd inst, has been kindly forwarded to us by that gentleman. From it we are enabled to arrive at the nature of the official re- ports obtained in tlie matter that shewed that it was 'not expedient to comply with the prayer of the petition,' as forwarded from here, with no less than two hundred and thirty-three signatures attached, in August of last year, and in placing the several reports before our readers, we shall endeavour to analyse them faithfully, in order that it may be seen at once as to whether there is a preponderance of justice and argument in favour of the desired estab lishment, or vice versa. ...
