Grass and water are extensively dried up; . and. the long prophesied .drought isat last upon us. The signs are .all indicative of it lasting for a length of timq, For instance, wihl fowl, which were in millions over our plains ; the past two or throe years, have, vanished — led bv instinct to flee from the 'drought. There are great ' numbers of sheep travelling in qijest of- foed ?and water ; apd we hear of sheep in paili. .docks gathering in corners and dying of thirst. Itmay be useful to mention at this time that , sheep so far gone for want of water 'that- tliey can't he driven by dogs may. be lured by a- water cart being taken to them, tljowatcr allowed to dribble, and then drawn straight to the wpll or other supply, tho sheep which had lain' down will get up, rush after (he cart, and so be. withdrawn from certa...

MELBOURNE,' (fiiom oun own- cbnitEsrosDENT.) Dee. 13tli, . 1873. They are a smart race the New South Welshmen, and ready to take a chance of every opening for pushing, trade. ' No sooner ' is the Border Customs Bill settled and free trade established between Victoria and New South Wales than a company js formed (I ' should rather call it n conspiracy only it is ppggesfive of Cockatoo) to siipply !us with best brands of American tobacco, at a price much lower than any of our merchants could afford to sell it. ? Taking, advantage of: the differential duty between the two colonies this enterprising company pass it over' tho Murray to us and so escape our heavy import duty. 'Not bad that, and.. only a pity it is that Mr. Francis will keep poking his nose into this customs business so as to spoil the trade. It's all up .a troo now, and 'the com pany is in liquidation. It was a 'oute thing of two members of the police forco in Kyneton when they caught Detective Millar selling grog without...

SYDNEY. 12th December, 1873. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 17 December 1873

SYDNEY. (from our own correspondent.') 12th December, 1873. ' The Australian Sphinx,' of last- week's Punch, gave a new illustration of mysterious power oil Friday, the day after the publica tion of that clever , cartoon. For when Mi\ Terry had moved the second -reading of his ' Triennial Parliament Bill,' - the Premier and his colleagues opposed it, and voted against it in a 'minority of 9 to 20 ; but when the , second reading had been carried the promoter of the Bill placed himself in Committee, under the guidance of the Pre mier. Mr. Piddington, - who had voted .against the second reading, ' proposed a new clause, making the Bill apply to the present Parliament ; this was carried, aud Mr. Terry announced to the Assembly that he had tho assurance of'the Government that they would now support the third reading. It will pro bably be seen to-day whether the Colonial Secretary has really given such a pledge, and means to stick to it, by voting for the third reading of the Bill which-h...

SHEEP. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 17 December 1873

? .SHEEP. Cheviot 'sheep lijjiy be described in- general terms as a white-faced, lniddle-wooled race.; the nialps horned and the females hornless ; adapted for the severe climate of the Cheviot Hills and for the lower slopes of the High land-mountains, ? wherever grass does not give way to heather. A11 attempt was made by -? Sir John Sinclair to supplant the Cheviot by meaijs of Southdowns, but the climate was : too severe for the hardy littlj; south country hreed. Cheviots, too, have been introduced into the true home of the Scotch Black Faces, but although 'successful during ordinary . sea ? suns, a severe winter upon those higli-lying' - and exposed lands proved to be too much for them. ' Crossed with Leieesters the pheviot sheep fprin a most invaluable breed, which .occupies a large portion of the border coun ties. When purely bred, the Chevoit sheep js hot fatted the first winter, but is reserved to be finished upon grass at eighteen months old, or is carried again on to turnip...
