MELBOURNE WEEKLY COMMERCIAL REVIEW ^, . , . Melbourne, Saturday evening. * u^n^u auui« were passoa at the Customs to-day on 28 oz IO dirts of gold for shipment as follows, viz.: 28 oz per Rangatira for Sydney, 10 dwts per Great Vic toria for London. The holidays have so far interfered with business in the import markets, that except in a few articles, scarcely anything has been doing. In tho earlier por tion of the week all the mercantile and government of fices were closed. The last day or two has slightly im proved, but business can even now scarcely be said to have thoroughly re-commenced. Several alterations have to be recorded in the value of articles, particulars of which will be found below. There is no animation observable in the market for bulk ales and porter, and with the exception of trade orders for seasonable light ales, nothing hes been doing. Bass's No. 4 is still quoted at £8 : Carlisle Company's is worth from £7 10s to £7 15s, sales having been effected at the latt...

GEELONG WEEKLY COMMERCIAL REPORT. Saturday evening. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 9 January 1865

GEELONG WEEKLY COMMERCIAL REPORT. I Saturday evening;. The Water Nymph has cleared from this pott for London, and will proceed upon her voyage probably to morrow. The Champion of the Seas is now the only vessel loading here, and it is not at all likely that she will be succeeded by another, as the quantity of wool now in store or expected to arrive, would not warrant agents in laying another vessel on the berth. Trade has slightly improved since the holidays, but no great activity can be expected till the arrival of the November mail, which may be telegraphed as having arrived at Adelaide any day next week. On the subject of wharfage rates, the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce is taking active measures with a view to their abolition, on the ground that the tax presses too heavily on the importer, and is likely to injure the trade of their port; recommending at the same time that the cost of the maintenance of the wharves should be paid from the revenue derived from import duties. MINING INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 9 January 1865

MINING INTELLIGENCE. Bunnes« at the corner on Saturday was mode rately brisk, and is evidently improving «poa the holiday stagnation. There were a good many BI quiries for stock, both in Ballarat proper and oaäy iug mines, and with no material alteration in any kind of scrip. The prices of established stock bave been well maintained. United Extended Band of Hopes recovered a little on Saturday as a good yield was reported, and sales were effected at £123 «nd £124. Nelsons were a little easier on account of »he hindrance in the mine ; sales were effected at *S1 IOs. Koh-i-Noors were firm at £60 10s; and Great Extended« at £33. There are few dividends deetaei this week, owing to the great number of stoppages; The Pitfield Plains ventures promise to be rich in revenue to the lessors, whatever the luck of the lessees may prove to be, and thc fact bears pointedly upon the often discussed subject of the nation of auriferous lands. In this case, tbs probability ls that the lands were soU f...

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. BALLARAT TRADE REPORT. Star Office, Saturday evening. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 9 January 1865

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. BALLARAT TRADE REPORT. Star Office, Saturday evening. Business has been rather dull during the week after j the holidays, with little disposition to buy on the part ! of purchasers. The facilities for adding to stocks are BO increased at this season that orders are confined to such goods as are immediately required for consumption, besides which the supply of goods to the retail stores direct from Melbourne houses has so increased of late, that it threatens to almost annihilate the existence of a set of local prices current, the Melbourne quotations, with carriage added, serving for most purposes. Cash collections have been rather below expectation, but the stoppage of so many running flnitw,? for the holidays may, to a great extent, account for this, and an improvement will shortly be visible. The timber and building branches of trade are brisk, and seem to enjoy the lion's share at present, In the produce market, sales of all kinds coming in have been effe...

Edmondson, CR.; Br J.E. Empson, S.C.R.; Br W. Webster, S.; Br T. S. Bellair., T.; Br Knolls, S.W.W.; Br E. Towl, J.W.W,; Br Thwaites, S.B.; Br G. Cox, J.Y.; Br G. Dymock, surgeon.   The number of visitors to the Ballarat East Public library for the week ending Saturday, 31st Decem ber, was six hundred and fifty-three. The library was closed on Monday, 2nd January, and on Thurs day, 6th, at six p.m. Some of the mining companies at Little Bendigo   do not agree with the Bungaree Road Board in the     matter of the assessment of the mining plants there. If formal appeals have not been entered the rate has been objected to and payment staved off, so that it is most likely the disputes will come before the courts. A rather singular accident happened to ...

The Ballarat Star. DAILY ISSUE. MONDAY, 9TH JANUARY, 1865. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Star — 9 January 1865

The Ballarat Star. DAILY ISSUE. MONDAY, 9TH JANUARY, 1865. IT has been said that the next annual en- campment of the volunteers is to be at Lal Lal. At present the thing is only a rumor, and it may never be anything more; but   wherever the encampment is to be the in- habitants of the town nearest thereto ought to have as early as possible intimation of the decision come to by the Volunteer Depart- ment. Ballarat claims to have the next encampment held here, and on the nearest suitable ground to the town itself. We do not hesitate to state the claim thus boldly, because we are of opinion that the claim is fairly asserted, and should be respectfully entertained. Melbourne has had the benefit of Werribee gatherings, and of that of Wood- end; and Geelong has had, besides its share of Werribee benefits, the more exclusive pro- fit of the Geelong camp and the fight on the Barwon. We now ask for a turn. Not, certainly, on account of our present military strength and efficienc...
