THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1858. SIXTEEN years have elapsed since some of our adventurous pioneers drove their flocks and herds from the southern part of the colony to the fer- tile district of Darling Downs; and notwith- standing the whole of the country, situated within a reasonable distance from the coast, has been stocked to a woaderful extent with sheep, cattle, and horses, the main roads leading through the immense tract of country between Drayton and the Leichhardt District have been wholly negleted; they are, in fact, mere bush tracts, with not a single bridge over any of the rivers and creeks, and in many places absolutely im- passable for drays, for weeks and months during very wet seasons. No signs of human thrift or human foresight have yet appeared to check the wildness of Nature, who revels in all her luxu- riant variety - witness not only the main thoroughfares, but even most of the streets in some of our principal towns.
