The Nurri, The Cumbil. The Brolga, and The Debbil-Debbil. A LEGEND OF THE WARADGERY. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 17 January 1927

The Nurri, The Cumbil. The Brolga, and The Debbil-Debbil. A LEGEND OF THE WARADGERY. By "THE BEJAH." [The foik-lore and legends of the Abori- gines of Australia, if published in a cheap and popular form, would surprise many, Australians particularly, by their wonderful capacity for imagery and fascinating rom- ance. The writer of the following article died about twenty years ago, when manager of a pastoral property. Those of us who know the habits of the aborigines and their manner of describing events, will acknow- ledge the writer has caught and accurately written the words as an aborigine would utter them. This legend is published now for the first time,-Ed. Pioneer]. (The opening scene of the following sketch is an actual experience, when the writer was on Waradgery Station, in 1902. Bundalooie is a real character; the three children were those of the writer). I. There had been a suspicion of frost in the early morning air of this perfect July day just enough to give snap and en...

KEEP YOUR EYE ON GERMANY. Official German Manual. Gospel of Hate. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 17 January 1927

KEEP YOUR EYE ON GERMANY. Official German Manual. Gospel of Hate. A new edition of the guide for training in the Army, a book which ls placed in the hands of every recruit, has been issued by the Ger- man Ministry of Defence, and contains a new and remarkable chapter on the Treaty of Ver- sailles. In this the opponents of Germany in the war are still called the Feindbund (enemy al- liance), and statements are made which are calculated to promote hatred of the Allies andt a spirit of revenge among the troops. The chapter begins with the statement: "Although Germany was unconquered in the field, she could not continue the war on account of the desertion of her allies, and, above all, on account of the starva- tion of the people by blockade, which was contrary to all international law." The soldier is taught that Germany was swindled by the Allies, and thus has the right to demand the revision of the Treaty of Ver- sailles, which she was forced to accept because it was impossible to de...

Captain Cook- His Last Days and Death Some new lights on the events of 1778 and 1779, which led up to Captain Cook's death in Hawaii, in February, 1779. (Concluded from last issue). ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 17 January 1927

Captain Cook - His Last Days and Death Some new lights on the events of 1778 and 1779, which led up to Captain Cook's death in Hawaii, in February, 1779. ( Concluded from last issue). BY THE HON. SIR JOSEPH CARRUTHERS, K C MG. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Two more matters remain to be dealt with in order to clear the memory of Captain Cook, namely (1) the alleged worship of him as the natives' god Lono, and (2) his alleged mis- conduct with a daughter of the High Chiefess of Kauai (one of the Hawaiian Islands) in 1778. As to No. 1 of these charges: When Cook arrived in the Islands in 1778 at Kauai, and in 1779 at Hawaii, he was re- ceived with ceremony by the priests and natives. The common people prostrated themselves before him at both places, and at Hawaii the High Priest conducted him and Captain King into the temple alongside of the landing place. I have personally visited this temple several times, in 1924, 1925 and 1926. It is within fifty yards of the beach where Cook's boats landed...
