Judging Sheep. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 April 1896

Judging Sheep. The writer of the wool article in the ' Sydney Morning Herald ' is a man who talks sense. His opinions are always worth hearing. His opinions on sheep j udging are very cautiously given and we commend it to the con sideration of our readers. In the ' Herald ' of Saturday last he says : — 'At a recent meeting of the New South Wales Sheeobreeders' Associa L tion it was decided that at the forth coming exhibition of the society two judges be appointed for each section. It was contended that in other descrip tions of stock, horses, cattle, etc., one judge was more likely to give true de cisions than when more were engaged ; but that in sheep, where such tine dis tinctions are made in the classes, any individual judge, being, as is very often the case, also a breeder, though not, of course, an exhibitor, would naturally have a predilection for the sheep that most nearly approached his own ideal. Like every other question, there is a great deal to be said on hoth sides, and...

Meat Exporters' Association. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 April 1896

Meat Exporters' Association. Says the ' Queensland Grazier ' : — Now that the elections are over and the wild excitement is settling down, ?we can once more turn our minds to business, in the sure and certain faith that Parliament won't do us much harm — or good. Whatever is done that is to be of real, lasting value must be done by ourselves, and the attempt now beiug made to amal gamate is one that deserves serious consideration. A meeting of nearly all the large companies interested in meat exportation was held in Sydney last month, and if a strong Association can ba formed it will be well. The old barbaric system of com petition is a healthy one to a cer tain extent. It developes all of strength and power there is in a man. ?' God bless us all, but the devil take the hindmost ' is a kind of an aphorism that is all right if you are not the hindmost, but we want to abolish that chap as far as we can, and by associa tion we will do it. What we need now is to stand together. We have ...

Our Book Review. A BOOK ABOUT POULTRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 April 1896

Our Book Review. A BOOK ABOUT POULTRY. The Australasian Poultry Guide, by Jas. I. McCue, with illustrations by A. J. Compton. George Robertson and Co., Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, London. Post free from this office, Is 3d. A good man and a wise man said, ' As soon as you begin to write about hens in the Stock and Station Journal ' it's a goner.' There may be something in that, but my opinion is that there's not a great deal in it, because a lot of pastoralists keep fowls. I'll tell you how I know that. The breeders who advertise in our columns find it pays them, and that is because pastoralists are interested in fowls. Now this book of McCue's is a good one, because it's not written in a formal style. The writer argues with you, and lays out his facts so clearly that you know where you are from the jump. In fact when you've read the book you feel as if you knew all about hens. I think I could take that book and study it and start a hen farm myself, and if you could get a ...

A Desperate Cattle Stealer. STILL AT LARGE. The police in tho Morce district are busily engaged in hunting for Jack Timmins, who is wanted there and in Queensland for cattle stealing, but he has eluded arrest up to the present time. He is armed with a Winchester repeating rifle and revolvers, and told his brother that he would not be taken alive. Timmins was formerly im prisoned for seven years in the Goulburn gaol, for a similar offence, and received six months' extra sentence for trying to escape by filing through the cell bars.

United States Farm Crops, 1895. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 April 1896

United States Farm Crops, 1895. The United States statistician of the Agricultural Department on January 4 issued his annual report on the re sults of the year's farm crops, of which the following is a summary. As the areas under all the other culti vated crops specified aggregate to only 22,801,817 acres over maize cul tivation alone, precedence is given in the report to the records for the latter. In 1895 the total area of maize har vested was 82,075,830 acres, an in crease on the previous year of 19,4.93,560 acres, or nearly one third. The total yield has been 2,151,139,000 bushels, an increase on 1894 of 938, 30' 9,000 bushels. It is the largest quantity ever harvested, and exceeds the previous largest yield --in 1889 — by 38,247,000 bushels. The rate of yield for 1895 is 26'2 bushels per acre, against 194 in 1894. It has been exceeded four times during the past 15 years, — viz., in 1880 with 27.6 bushels., in 1889 and 1891 with 27 bushels, and in 1885 with2G'5 bushels. The tota...

Boiled Down. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 14 April 1896

Boiled Down. The Royal College of Surgeons has adopted Dr. Fewings's serum treat ment for the cure of diphtheria. At the police court at Rockhampton on Friday, David Bowers was com mitted for trial on a charge of being concerned in the burning of the Ayr shire Downs woolshed. The maize crops at Richmond are being harvested, and while in some instances the yields are phenomenal, the average is considered to be some what below that of last year. The disease known as maize smut is more prevalent, and farmers will have to overcome this by securing changes of good seed, and treating it before sow ing by approved methods of smut prevention. The district as a whole looks splendid. There was a most peculiar occur rence on Saturday morning at Graf ton. The day broke fine and clear, with a westerly wind. After 6 o'clock a dense yellow dry fog rose, like a thick haze from a bush fire, and it hung over the town until 11 o'clock, gradually dis persing. A similar occurrence is un known to the res...
