THE YOUNG MEN'S JEWISH ASSOCIATION To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 August 1897

THE YOUNG MEN'S JEWISH ASSOCIATION To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Sir, — In reading your valuable paper my attention was attracted by an article en tiled ?' The Jewish Young Men's Association.' I, as a young man, consider that such an ? Association or Society with the membership of both sexes is urgently needed. I take the liberty of suggesting that a Society be formed with the object of uniting our Jewish young people. At present there is not any society that will extend a helping hand to a stranger unless he is introduced by our leading Jewish citizens, and there has been a great want of feeling in this respect. I have known several young men of good families who have wanted to make the acquaintance of a few Jewish people and have always found it a hard matter. Is it any wonder that young men marry out of their religion ? And I consider that if the Jewish young people met in social way, this difficulty would be overcome. There is at present only the Hebrew Literary and Deba...

SUPERSTITION AMONG THE JEWS IN BAGDAD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 13 August 1897

SUPERSTITION AMONG THE JEWS IN BAGDAD. The Anglo-Jewish Association's Report is a volume of° close, on 150 page--. It contains news from all parts of the world, especially dealing with the transactions of Jewish matters. The following is included in the report, and is from the pen of Mr. Morris Cohen, English Master at the Bagdad School : — In reviewing the social position of the Jews of Bagdad, the greatest drawback to improve ment is found to be the ignorance and super stition of the women. Their prejudicial in fluence acts continually upon all with whom they come in contact The ridiculous notions which they acquire in childhood cling to them through life, and are finally transmitted to all the members of their respective families. The consequences of their erroneous notions are met with at every step, and their conduct, which naturally adapts itself to their absurd idea?, strikes the mind of an educated person with the profoundest astonishment. From the cradle to the grave they w...
