The State and the Farmer. HANDLING OF WHEAT. Most people realise in a general way that at least to three States Victoria, New South Wales, anw South Australia-wheat growing is a vitally important matter. Com paratively few, however, have gome at all carefully into the figures or know how much the cost of mar keting affects, and must affect, the area under cultivation. According to the report of the Royal Commis sion, which cnusidered the q es tion, the price of wheat has during the last ten vears varied frnom 2s 9d to 4s 2d per bnushei ; when the ot-date methods of handling, butl when the lower price rules the cost of marketing under utterly out-of date methods is ruinous. The re port of the Royal Commission says that the cost of bags is from s- i pence to sevenpence, that the cost of handling them is a big item and that the usual method of weiwhing i them is quite unsatisfactory.
