SMALL DEBTS . COURT. There were several cases in this court, Mr. Haslingden being interested in most of them could not Bit on the Bench; the court was then adjourned for a week. Scarlet Fever.—The prevalence of this malady still continues in the district, few families escape its risitatiou; scarcely a week passes without adding to its victims : this week .two deaths have oceured, one in Bega the other in Fanbula; the former a child, the latter a young girl of 16 yeaTS old. It was supposed that this girl died from other cauBSi, which proved to be without foundation, as the magistrates held an inquiry and caused a post mortem examination of the body to be made, the result was, that deceased died from scarlet fever, and was perfectly free from any other disease. One poor man in Panbula lost four children from it, and a fifth now lies dangerously ill. Gentlemen,—Iu reply to your letter which appeared in the Bcga Gazette o£ the 29th ult., wherein you state that from the violence done to jour feelings, you felt compelled publicly to make known your sentiments in reference to a ■ professional notice 1 had put forth in a previous number of the paper, to the effect that I would not attend any mid wifery cases unless my services were previously engaged. POLIO If CO (JUT. Wednesday 16m August. (Before their Worships, R. Ritchie, and J. D'Arcy, Esnvs., James Maples was brought up untlev warrant for having a quantity of hides in his possession, supposed to be stolen. Prisoner pleaded guilty of having the hiJec, but not stealing thorn, the.v were the skins of beasts that had died from disease and poverty. ■Senior-constablc Cleary having been duly sworn, stated that he had apprehended the prisoner by virtue of a search warrant, and that he found a quantity of hides of various brands on his premises; among which were two of Mr. Thomas Underbill's, of Stoney Creek. Sub-inspector Hussy stated to the Bench that it was well-known illifting existed in this district; that it was nothing but proper people should be taught not to meddle with their neighbors cattle, dead or alive; and as the prisoner was a very old hand among cattle, it would be absurd in him to plead ignorance of the law; he would therefore ask their worships for a conviction. -...

Disorganization and i'lncss prevails among the negroes; poverty and disappoint m ;nt anion? the whites. On the 10th a party of 200 whites attacked a settle ment of negroes ill Washington, drove them from their homes, beat them, destroyed tlieir furniture, and appro priated whatever of value could be obtained.
