ENTERTAINING SOLDIERS. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the Strathallan rest home on Tuesday evening, when a good musical programme was given by thile following artists and much appreciated:-- Misses Dorothy Humphreys, Down, Lily Thoinpson, Tait, Mr arid Mrs Wyath, and Mr Pe ters. Refreshments, on a dainty and liberal scale, were served by the visitors. The promoters of.the concert (Mlesdames Coate and Beasley, of Fairfield), wish to thank the performers, those who contri buted to the supper, and the following gentlemen for supplying cars: Messrs Page, R.-Brewer, A. Williams, and Cr. Rank.

Ce IIRWS. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING SATURDAY, AUGUST 12. TOPICS OF THE WEEK. MEETING IN HEIDELBERG. An intercession meeting was held in Scots Church, Heidelberg, on August 4, the anniversary of the declaration of war. It was held at 3 o'clock, and over 60 persons met. The Rev. W. H. Hodge presided, and gave a concise ad dress on the position. The following ministers took part: Revs. Bradbury, Frewin, Hardie, Robertson, and Thom. Miss Smith presided at the organ, and as a voluntary played the " Flowers of the Forest"--the highland lament. The service was much appreciated. The min isters met at the close and decided to call all the ministers in the Heidelberg shire, of which there are 17, to consider the advisability of foroming a ministerial as sociation, and to meet in Scots Church, Heidelberg, on the 288th, at.10.30. The Rev. A. Hardie was appointed secretary pro ternm.

PATRIOTIC SERVICE AT FAIR- I FIELO. The second anniversary of the war, and the first anniversary of the Red Cross Society, Fairfield (men's branch), was celebrated by a united patriotic thanksgiving and interces sory service in the Park Theatre, Fairfield, on Sunday evening last, commencing after the churches were out. There were about 1100 people present, and there was a combined choir of the various churches, Mr. A. Smith being conductor, and Mis. Higgins pianist.
