DEPRIVING THE PEOPLE OF THEIR BIGHTS. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Star — 20 June 1900

DEPRIVING THE PEOPLE OP THBIR RIGHTS. In this paper of the 9th instant there appeared an advertisement from the Department of Fisheries, notifying that W. S. Lavington had applied for an oyster lease of 1000 yards on the northern foreshore of the Bega River, and further stating that any person might by memorial to tho Commis sioners, and on grounds to be stated, pray that suoh lease be not granted. As this is a matter which very much concerns tbe people of Boga and neighborhood, and as two memorials sent in objecting to the leasing of tbe river have been barely acknowledged by the Department, we dsem it a duty to say something about it, and give the people a little insight into the way things are occasionally conduoted in some of tbe publio departments ; and in discharging what we oonsider an obligation, we do so without ex pectations of approbation or the ap prehensions of aensare. Now for the facts. On tbe 16th of Fobruary, 1897, at tbe request of 71 looal resi dents, a proclamati...
