To the Editor of the Goulburn Herald. [Newspaper Article] — The Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser — 5 August 1848

To tIe Editor of the Goulbursa Herald. Sin, PeRCElvING in your valuable journal of the 20th instant, au article from your correspondent, headed " Queenbeyan," wherein the writer calls the attention of the honiorable member for Mur ray to the abuses, as your correspondenit states,. which are carried on by poundkeepers. As I have a slight knowledge of the Impound ing Act, perhaps you will allow me the privilege of replying to those sweeping and unjust charges against the poundkeepers of the interior, and I may also add against every bench of Magistrates where such pounds are situated; for it is well known that all Iteepers of public pounds are ap pointed by the Justices of .the. Court of Petty Sessions, and of course are answerable for their -acts to them. Under these circumstances, your correspondent most assuredly cannot for a mo ment suppose that he will, by his unreasonable remarks, cause the public or the hot. member for Murray to believe there is any one bench in the colony, muc...

"PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT." MUNICIPALITIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser — 5 August 1848

SPALlMA QUI IERUIT ERA"-T." - 0" MUNICIPALITIES. AMONG the various interesting topics dis cussed by the candidates at the late elec ti ion, although that of the nefarious' Land Regulations' was of paramount impprt anc~e, there were many minor subjects touched upon no less worthy.of attention. Of the number was one, having reference to the alignment of streets, and oilier Sregulations calculated to insure th'e health comfort, and convenience of the denizens of country towns, which, in our opinion, should by no means be overlooked. We allude to the suggestion of introducing, in lieu of the obnoxious District Councils, (whlich were designed for this purpose) some competent board to watch over and ,.direct. the municipal machinery of the rural towns and villages, until they shall have arrived at that state of ma turity, from their wealth, population and importance, which will entitle them to receive higher municipal honors. The disgraceful state of the streets of Goulburn after rain,-it...

FAREWELL. [Newspaper Article] — The Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser — 5 August 1848

FAREWELL., FAREWELL, farewell, we may not meet As we have met before, Joy's flowers lie wither'd at our feet, o-lope beams for us no more. The future has no cheeringiray, . No sunshine of the soul, To chase each coming oloud away And fate's dark hour controul. Farewell--my lips no other name Will ever learn to bless, My heart will throb for thee the same Through all my deep distrees; For thee alone my earnest prayer, My fondest wish will be, Then, though it teach thee to despair, Think, with a tear, on me.

Murray, Esq. by his constituents took place at Quean-   beyan, on Monday the 24h ult. at Mr. John Hunt's Inn. Among those who attended to do honor to the guest were the Rev. E. Smith, Dr. Murray, Capt.   Faunce, C. Campbell, Palmer, Powell, Hayley, Wright, Macquoid, Esqrs. and almost all the respectable towns people and settlers from every quarter of the   district.   Although we cannot yet boast a Royal Hotel in this advancing little township, the arrangements made by Mr. Hunt to entertain so large a party were excellent, and the dinner and dessert provided on tile occasion did him great credit, con sidering we are nearly two hundred miles in the interior, so sumptuous a table could scarcely have been expected. The chair was taken by C. Campbell, Esq. and the vice-chair by Capt. Faunce. Grace being said by the Rev. Mr. Smith, the...
