FIRES AT MOUNT BARKER. | Monday was a scorching hoL day, ' just such a one as would lend itself | well to the spread of a fire, and those | anticipating a tussle with the >fiery ■ demon were given no less man three I opportunities. The first call came ; from the clover paddocks adjoining | the late Mr. H. S. Dunn's property I almost within the town boundary. | The fire started at the feet of one of the attendants of a grass clipping ma chine. He had no means of stamping the blaze out and the fire spread rapid ly over the clover which was just to he raked for seed. Howard, and he was harvesting at the time of the out break. That portion was not insured. Mr. Stephenson, who lost about two acres of heavily seeded grass was covered by the Liverpool, London and Hlohe Insurance Company. All told, •there was about seven ...

THE DAIRY INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

THE DAIRY INDUSTRY, The dairy industry, though regarded as one ot the most important in the Commnowealth, has not expanded ap preciably during the last seven years and it is becoming a question of what is the cause ot this stagnation. Re cently the Primary Producers Union, at itB conference in Sydney, con sidered tbe question at great length and decided to ask for an increased duty of at least sixpence per pound on imported butter, and an "All-Aus tralian price" consistent with Aus tralian conditions. This resolution has been supported in many parts of the Commonwealth by those engaged in the dairying industry, and it is ra pidly becoming a very live question with dairymen of South Australia. The supporters of the demand for in creased duty point out that the pre sent duty of twopence per pound on j.ew Zealand butter is equivalent to about 11 per cent., but that the duty leviable on imports generally is about 40 per cent., and that as a matter of fair play between the two sections o...

"SWEET DADDIES." [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 14 January 1927

"SWEET DADDIES." Few, if any, comedy themes are more 1 popular than that which lends itself to the brand of hilarity that results on the wordy wars between Irishmen and Jews. Such a theme is featured in First Na tional's comedy attraction, "Sweet Dad dies," which th<> management of the Murray Brdige Lyric Theatre has secured for screening to-morrow- (Saturday). Especially welcome is this picture when one finds Charlie Murray cast in the Irishman's role, and George Sidney and Vera Gordon there to maintain Jewish pride. "Sweet Daddies" provides a really compelling romance as well as the highly acceptable comedy episodes, Jack Mulhall and Jo)>yna Ralston portraying the lovers' partjf with characteristic sin cerity. After many humorous situations are unwound, the respective "daddies" enter a partnership, which entails the delivery uf a consignment of "moon shine" liquor. It is then that the real j lun begins,' each blaming the oilier'when j things go wrong. i
