Spriggs in America. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 September 1879

Spriggs in America. Tmjt on d politeness obvia'.e many difficulties. A rcturnei miner from the Black Hilt* orriruJ in town, went to a saloon and oskel (or some of the beat whisky in the house, and when it was serrol to him spat it out with unutterable loathing, and said " I called for wliihkj-, young man; mebbe you didn't hear me ?" The bar-keeper said that he had bearJ him, and that he hal given him whUky. The gentleman from Deadn-ood proccedcl with more deadly calmness, though his hand instinctively sought his hip-pocket, " I cal led for the belt whisk; in the hourc, young man; mebbe you did not catch the full signi ficance of my lauguage 1" Now, many another bar-keeper, under similar circumstance', would havo resented the insinuation at to his liquor by pouring it into the sink, and saying, " You don't know good whisky whon you Bee it," or words to tliut cffect, or have offered tho man BOO dollars if be could find at good whisky as that anywhere on the footstool, or in some other...

In the first place, thiB all bat 30 miles of desert Willi abundance of poison weed, on what he calls Mr. Jardinc's pet road, can exUt only in his owm "imngina tion, as people that have travelled the road would hare seen it.
