No title [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 15 February 1868

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday oyeniug3 last Dr. Carr, mesmorist electro biologist, and phrenologist, entertained the public of Gundagai at Webb's assembly room with very interesting anel scientific discourses coupled with amusing illustrations by ' putting members of his audiences in a mesmeric and biological state. Tho Dr. is without doubt a clever man, and' notwithstanding Gundagai, as most every, other town, contains still some sceptics, we are prepared to vouch for the genuineness of the science, and had Dr. Carr been at liberty for another seance we think ho would have entirely convinced the sceptical that no sane individual would rigidly stand and undergo a torturous opera tion^vithout exhibiting some token of nain, orfigp of mental ari juish merely to deflate or guJMhe public. W s affirm that the Idence advocated by Dr. Carr is becomT3§thore appreciable in our hospitals, as many in stances that we havi i read of will confirm, and medical men. however sceptical at first,...

AN INDIAN'S REVENGE. CHAPTER III. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 22 February 1868

A.N INDIAN'S REVENGE. Chapter III. At the period when our story opens, the North American Indians were no longer the sole possessors of those vast tracts which have since become merged into tbe United States Tbe wbite-skina bad come, and gradually, little by little, were driving tbe original in habitants into the woods, and were aiming apparently at their total extermination. The savages, who had at first been deceived hy the specious behaviour of their new neigh bours, were not slow to perctKe, with regret, that the inch which bad been granted was about to become something more tban an ell and that the wave of European colonization would ere long sweep their lowly wigwams and their ancient tribes from off the babituble face of the earth. Like that English king who was dragged as a prisoner through tbe streets of Rome, wondering what bo mighty a people could see to envy in bia humble British cottage, so the Indiana were smitten with surprise at the persecution to which they were sub...

It was in his power to inSict a heavy sentence on the roads, but as prisoner was a young man, an-' one Dot stamped with grosser crime, he would pass a shorter but severer sentence than be might otherwise have done, and be hoped that prisoner would thereby bave time for reflection and profit by it. Attempted Subornation of Verjtrfy. Michael Burke was charged with an at tempt to procure subornation of pirjury, by soliciting Mary Lucas to swear falsely ns witness on his behalf in a caso brought by Julia Murphy against him at the police court, Gundo fjni, on the SOth of October last. Accused, who was defended by Mr. Stephen, pleaded not guilty. The Crown Prosecutor in stating tbe nature of the charge observed that the original matter of dispute between the defendant end Mrs. Murphy might be a paltry affdir but that- diil not lessen tbe grave nature of tbe offence of which he stood accused. If he tried to get a person to commit such a misdemeanour for a trivial matter, be would not scruple to make tbe same attempt in more serious cases. Mr. D. Smith, C.P.S. to tbe Gundagai Court, produced the information laid hy Julia Murphy against Michael Burke, dated 28th October last, which was the effect that on the ll'h of October accused had said he would drive the Hastiness cut of her acd ...
