Federal Voters. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 20 December 1904

Federal Voters. Feom all we can glean there will prob ably 1h? a smaller percentage than ever of Federal voteis recording their votes at_ the next election, owing to the way many of the registrars' districts have been airan-'ed. For instance all voters resi dent on Deep Creek. Wy-in. aud Mtim mulguni have lieen plac«l on the Green ridge registrar's list : and as a result it is asserted llwt not more than 25 j-er cent, of the votes will be recorded. If it is not possible to secure another re gistrar for the Wvan aud Mummulguui centres, then clearly it would be more convenient for voters in those localities to have their names on the Casino divi sion list. This is a matter worthy of the close atten'ioii of our Federal member.

Sugar. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 20 December 1904

Sugar. A Queensland sugar-cane grower very jn.-tlv points out that the excisc duty on i-ngar is detrimental to the sugar-growers «f these States, as it reduces the protec tion of import duty from i'lj to £'5 ; therefore, it we allow this excise to re main in lorce, mere win i»e oiii- - j»fi ton of protection against the outside j world. I am satisfied that with a pro tection duty of £H per ton, and no excise and having the federated States as a market for our sugars, mannfactnrers could pay or 25s. per ton for cane, aud L think both the growers and manu facturers would be better pleased and more content than they are at the pre sent time.

TiiKl.K t-et nis to he eonsidrnilile diver sity of opinion in reirartl to the pro posal to abolish the system of gnmlin^ pensions to our Judges. Ot course there are arguments for aud :--^iiu-t. So far as New South Wales, or in fact any of the Stairs, are t-onifi i.cd, the Jnd-jes we tin re bad have been men abort suspicion, though possibly one or two of them possessed eccenlricilics. There are few men without such in some form or other. And we fci vently believe that had there been no such thing as pen.-ions attaching to ihe office of Judge, the same men would be tilling the oflicis as now occupy them. In prove ol (his surmise, take the High Court of Australia. The gentlpnien occupying the Bench in that Court are admittedly as learned, capable, and reliable in every sense as any three professional men in the sontheni hemisphere, and y« t they accepted the positions in the far* of the knowledge that the Frdenil Parliament had cat ont the pension system in con nection with the judgesh...
